Mechatronics / Automation Engineering Intern
Wisconsin Aluminum Foundry | Manitowoc, WI
- Don’t just study automation. Build it.
- Take what you’ve learned in the classroom and put it to work on robots, controls and equipment running on a real foundry floor, alongside experienced engineers.
- This is a paid, 12-14 week internship running May/June through August 2027, with flexible hours on day shift. Projects you may work on:
- Robots and cobots: improve cobot utilization, explore automating core blow-off (including 3D-printed cores) and possibly core dipping, and learn FANUC robot and cobot programming
- Process improvement (help improve gating yield)
- PLC and HMI controls: support smaller controls projects, like our core spinning cell and a leak tester, including programming, cabinet building and wiring diagrams
- Machine vision: program VS Series inspection cameras for real inspection applications
- Controls upgrades: help plan and prepare for larger upgrades to aging equipment like ovens and reclaimers
- Troubleshooting: help diagnose electrical issues on the floor as they come up
You’ll walk away able to
- Program FANUC robots and cobots
- Program PLCs and HMIs
- Read wiring diagrams and troubleshoot real control cabinets
- Explain how much research and design goes into a controls upgrade before anyone touches a wire
You might be a fit if you
- Are studying Mechatronics, Electrical, Automation, Controls or Mechanical Engineering, or similar
- Are curious about how machines, controls and robotics work
- Prefer hands-on engineering to purely theoretical work
- Like figuring out why something isn’t working
- Are detail-oriented, safety-minded and willing to work on the plant floor
- Ask questions and learn from experienced engineers and technicians
- We’re not looking for someone who already knows everything. We want someone who wants to figure things out.
