Summary

We are seeking a Senior Ansible Engineer to join our Platform Engineering team and serve as the subject matter expert for enterprise Ansible automation. The role involves designing scalable automation frameworks, establishing Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) standards, mentoring engineers, and reducing manual operational effort across large-scale, multi-environment infrastructure.

Roles & Responsibilities

Automation Architecture & Development

  • Design, develop, and maintain enterprise-grade Ansible playbooks, roles, collections, and inventories across development, staging, and production environments.
  • Build reusable, modular Ansible roles following Galaxy standards and organizational best practices.
  • Develop and maintain Ansible Collections for internal distribution.
  • Create custom Ansible modules and plugins in Python, including action, callback, connection, and lookup plugins.
  • Implement reliable, idempotent, and fault-tolerant automation for OS hardening, application deployment, configuration management, and cloud provisioning.

CI/CD & Automation Platform

  • Integrate Ansible with Jenkins, GitLab CI, GitHub Actions, and Azure DevOps pipelines.
  • Implement automated testing using Molecule, Testinfra, and pytest.
  • Administer Ansible Automation Platform (AAP)/AWX, including organizations, inventories, credentials, projects, templates, and workflows.
  • Follow GitOps practices and manage automation code using Git.
  • Define Ansible coding standards, ansible-lint rules, code-review practices, and development guidelines.

Infrastructure & Cloud Automation

  • Automate AWS, Microsoft Azure, and GCP environments using Ansible cloud modules and dynamic inventories.
  • Integrate Ansible with Terraform for hybrid IaC workflows covering provisioning and configuration management.
  • Automate infrastructure patching, compliance enforcement, configuration management, and drift remediation at scale.

Security & Compliance

  • Manage secrets using Ansible Vault and integrate with enterprise secret-management platforms.
  • Automate CIS Benchmark and STIG-based system hardening and compliance.
  • Review existing automation for security risks, including hardcoded credentials, insecure configurations, and unnecessary privilege escalation.

Required Technical Skills

  • Strong hands-on experience with Ansible Automation Platform (AAP) or AWX administration.
  • Expert understanding of Ansible architecture, including control/managed nodes, static and dynamic inventories, facts, SSH, WinRM, and network CLI connections.
  • Advanced knowledge of playbook constructs including handlers, loops, conditionals, blocks, tags, delegation, error handling, failed_when, rescue, and related features.
  • Advanced Jinja2 templating, filters, tests, custom filters, and complex data transformations.
  • Strong Python skills for scripting and custom Ansible module development.
  • Deep understanding of Ansible roles, including defaults, vars, metadata dependencies, include_role, and import_role.
  • Experience developing and publishing Ansible Collections through Galaxy or private Automation Hub.
  • Knowledge of Ansible performance tuning through ansible.cfg, including forks, pipelining, SSH multiplexing, and callback plugins.
  • Linux administration experience across RHEL/CentOS/Ubuntu, including networking, systemd, and package management.
  • Experience with Git workflows, branching, pull requests, and tagging.
  • Familiarity with Docker, Kubernetes, and Ansible Kubernetes modules.
  • Experience with Ansible Vault and enterprise secrets-management solutions.
  • Event-Driven Ansible (EDA), AWX, and Receptor experience is advantageous.

Leadership & Governance

  • Conduct Ansible code reviews and mentor junior and mid-level engineers.
  • Establish and enforce automation architecture, coding, testing, and review standards.
  • Create architecture documentation, operational runbooks, and onboarding guides.
  • Evaluate and recommend tools and technologies within the Ansible ecosystem.
