AFD Petroleum Energy

AR, Credit and Collection Supervisor

Edmonton, Canada In person Full-time

Founded in 1989, AFD Petroleum is a leading independent supplier of fuel, lubricants, and storage solutions across Alberta, B.C., Yukon, and Alaska. With over three decades of experience, we’re committed to delivering reliable service, innovative solutions, and lasting value, centered on our people, our customers, and our communities.

Job Summary: We’re looking for a credit professional who likes to be in the work, not just above it. As our Credit & Collections Supervisor, you’ll own AFD’s commercial credit and collections function: approving credit, setting limits and terms, leading collections from first call to resolution, and managing our collection agency and legal relationships with a sharp eye on recovery and cost. You’ll lead our head office Accounts Receivable team, set the standard for AR practices across our branch network, and report to our Corporate Controller.

Your Schedule

Full-time, permanent, Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., at our Edmonton office. Periodic weekend availability is required to coordinate trip release coverage, and additional hours may be needed during month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close.

Why AFD

  • Great health and insurance benefits – medical, dental, vision, life insurance, disability, AD&D – because we believe in taking care of yourself.
  • Discount on fuel.
  • Career development.
  • Paid orientation & training.
  • Personal/Sick Paid Days.

What you will do day-to-day

  • Evaluate new and existing commercial customers using financial statements, credit bureau reports, trade references, and payment history, and approve credit, limits, and terms within your delegated authority.
  • Maintain AFD’s credit policy and recommend updates as business conditions and risk tolerance change.
  • Lead collections from initial follow-up through escalation, negotiation, and resolution, and personally handle high-value, complex, or sensitive accounts.
  • Be the primary contact for our collection agencies: negotiate placement terms, monitor performance, and track every placed account through to recovery.
  • Work with legal counsel on litigation, liens, and security registrations, keeping legal costs down through timely escalation, solid documentation, and negotiated settlements.
  • Lead, train, and coach our head office AR team, and roll up your sleeves on cash application, reconciliations, and account work when needed.
  • Guide AR, Sales, and Branch staff across our locations so credit and AR practices are consistent company-wide.
  • Report monthly on aging, DSO, collection effectiveness, bad debt reserves, and legal spend, and understand how your numbers feed into our bank reporting.
  • Partner with Sales, Operations, Billing, and Customer Service to resolve disputes and tighten the order-to-cash cycle.

What you need to succeed

  • 5+ years of progressive experience in commercial credit and collections, accounts receivable, or billing, including at least 2 years supervising or leading a team.
  • Hands-on experience managing collection agencies and working with legal counsel on debt recovery.
  • Strong commercial credit analysis skills, including reading financial statements and credit reports.
  • Working knowledge of Canadian commercial collections and security practices, including PPSA registrations and lien legislation.
  • Advanced Excel skills and experience working in an ERP or accounting system.
  • Excellent negotiation and communication skills, with the ability to influence people who don’t report to you.

Extra skills and Knowledge

Certified Credit Professional (CCP) designation, or progress toward it.

Post-secondary education in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.

Experience with Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central.

Experience in fuel distribution, energy, transportation, or construction credit, or with U.S. (Alaska) collections.
