Product Data Engineering Intern (Hybrid)

Madison, WI Hybrid Internship

Location: WI Madison

Summer 2027 Intern – Product Data Engineering

An internship with American Family Insurance is a great opportunity to build your skillset and explore your career interests. Our summer student internship is a 10 to 14 week program that starts in mid to late May and ends in August.

During your internship, you'll work on impactful projects that make a difference at our company, with our customers, and in our communities. You'll also gain exposure to different areas of our business and have numerous opportunities for networking and coaching.

Interns may be eligible for a one-time hiring bonus to assist with housing costs depending upon proximity to an AmFam office location.

Compensation Minimum: $25.00

Compensation Maximum: $39.00

As a Product Data Engineering intern, you will work alongside experienced engineers on our service-oriented data and AI platform, which supports teams across AmFam, including security and AI. You'll build a real AI agent, put it into a real workflow, and then help improve the shared tools that make the next agent easier to build. You'll be paired with a mentor engineer for the full internship and finish with working software and a final presentation of what you built.

Responsibilities

Develop an understanding of our business, corporate culture and structure to support your work.

Contribute creative ideas and strategic approaches in response to changing situations.

Work with your mentor and a partner team to understand a real business problem, and help turn it into a working AI solution by breaking it into small, clear tasks.

Build and deploy an AI agent on our platform: give it tools, manage its context, and handle the unglamorous parts like retries, timeouts, and unexpected model output.

Contribute to a shared platform capability, such as evaluation, observability, or internal developer tooling, alongside the engineers who own it.

Follow team standards for code quality, testing, code review, and security, and write tests for the code you ship.

Help measure how well an existing AI solution works, for example by turning real failures into test cases, and share what you find with the team.

Take part in stand-ups, planning, and code reviews, ask questions early, and keep your mentor up to date on progress and blockers.

Add logging, metrics, and tracing so others can see what your agent did, what it cost, and whether it is still healthy.

Document what you built and hand it off so another engineer can pick it up, and present your work to the team at the midpoint and end of the internship.

Must be in student status at an accredited 4-year college or university during the internship, graduating August 2027 or later.

Must be pursuing a Bachelors, Masters, or PhD.

Major/program must align with internship role.

Demonstratable hands-on project or internship experience developing AI solutions

To ensure a strong start, all employees participate in our New Employee Orientation during their first week.  This experience is held in person at our Madison, WI Headquarters or one of our AmFam core locations to help you connect with our mission, meet key team members and build relationships that support your growth.  At times, sessions may be delivered virtually based on scheduling and availability.
