The Fitness team is shaping the future of personal health and activity across watchOS and iOS. Behind the features our users count on every day is the Fitness Quality team, a force multiplier for every engineer testing them. We build the automation frameworks and test infrastructure that let us test ambitious new fitness experiences quickly and with confidence. As a Tools and Automation Engineer on our team, you will be at the heart of this process.
In this role, you'll design and build automation frameworks, tools, and services that power Fitness quality engineering on watchOS and iOS. You'll work across the entire lifecycle, from on-device test automation to scalable backend systems and reporting. Your work will directly speed up innovation and help ensure the quality of fitness features used by millions of people worldwide.
Design, develop, and deploy automated tests and frameworks that check Fitness and Activity features end to end across watchOS and iOS, including scenarios that need a paired Apple Watch and iPhone.
Build tools that simulate real-world activity so fitness features can be tested repeatably and at scale.
Add automated test suites to CI/CD pipelines that run on every build, so regressions are caught early and engineering teams get fast, reliable feedback.
Keep the automation healthy: find and fix flaky tests, update coverage as features change, and retire tests that no longer add value.
Triage automated test failures daily. Separate product regressions from test or infrastructure problems, and file clear, reproducible bug reports with the diagnostics engineers need to act.
Investigate complex failures across devices, OS builds, and lab infrastructure, and find the root cause so problems don't come back.
Report results through dashboards and summaries that turn raw test data into clear quality signals, such as pass-rate trends, regressions, coverage gaps, and release readiness, for engineering and program leadership.
Work with software engineers, QA engineers, and program managers from early bring-up through release to set automation strategy, gather requirements, and get teams using new tools.
Strong computer science fundamentals, including object-oriented design. A specific degree or concentration is not required.
Proficiency in Python or Swift, with experience writing maintainable test automation or tooling, and a willingness to learn.
Experience with automated testing frameworks (e.g., XCTest, XCUITest, pytest) and CI/CD systems.
Proven ability to triage failures and find the root cause of complex issues across software, devices, and infrastructure, using logs, crash reports, and debugging tools.
Clear written and verbal communication, including turning technical findings into actionable bug reports and concise summaries for engineers and leadership.
5+ years of relevant industry experience in software engineering, test automation, or a related role.
Hands-on experience building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines (e.g., Jenkins, GitLab CI, GitHub Actions) and version control systems (Git).
Experience with SQL and relational databases (e.g., PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQLite) for querying and analyzing test results at scale.
Experience automating physical devices in a test lab, including multi-device or hardware-in-the-loop setups.
Experience owning quality for new products or features during early development and platform bring-up.
Familiarity with Apple developer tools such as Xcode, Instruments, and xcodebuild.
Familiarity with monitoring, observability, and data visualization tools (e.g., Grafana, Splunk, Tableau) for tracking automation health and reporting quality trends.
