Your role
We are looking for one master’s student to explore how quantum computing could support industrial software and manufacturing systems and help Atlas Copco prepare for future experimentation.
Background
Quantum computing is developing rapidly, but its industrial value remains uncertain. Optimization, scheduling, simulation, and machine learning show potential, while current hardware has important limitations. This thesis will distinguish realistic opportunities from hype without assuming that quantum computing is the best solution.
Scope
You will evaluate where quantum or hybrid computing could be relevant in industrial applications, develop a reusable assessment approach, and select one use case for a proof of concept together with the supervisors.
The work is expected to include
Reviewing relevant quantum technologies, algorithms, hardware, and software
Assessing industrial experiments and identifying potential use cases in tightening, manufacturing, and connected tools
Developing a framework for assessing quantum suitability and readiness
Implementing one proof of concept and benchmarking it against established classical methods
Recommending what Atlas Copco should investigate now, monitor, or deprioritize
The work should balance technical potential, practical limitations, and business relevance. Classical methods may remain preferable today if the thesis clarifies what could make quantum approaches relevant in the future.
Start: January 2027
Duration: Six months, or according to agreement
Number of students: One
To succeed, you will need
You are pursuing a master’s degree in computer science, software engineering, engineering physics, applied mathematics, operations research, or a related field
You are interested in algorithms, optimization, mathematical modelling, software development, data analysis, or industrial applications
Previous experience with quantum computing is beneficial but not required
You are curious, analytical, self-driven, and comfortable challenging assumptions, structuring complex problems, and collaborating across disciplines
In return, we offer
You will work on a real industrial challenge, collaborate with specialists across Atlas Copco, and gain hands-on experience in technology assessment, industrial software, optimization, and research methods. You will also gain insight into product development in a global industrial company.
Job location
This role requires you to work on-site at our office in Stockholm, Sweden (SE). You will be part of a dynamic team and enjoy the benefits of face-to-face collaboration.
