The role
We are looking for experienced Risk Specialists to join APRA’s Cyber, Operational Resilience and AI Strategy team.
You will help shape APRA’s regulatory and supervisory response to some of the most significant and rapidly evolving non-financial risks facing Australia’s financial system, particularly those arising from cyber threats, AI adoption and emerging technologies.
A key part of the role is bringing together specialist and supervisory expertise from across APRA. You will work across organisational boundaries to build a shared understanding of emerging risks, draw together different perspectives and drive a coherent APRA response.
You will use data, evidence and expertise to understand how risks are changing, determine their prudential implications and translate those insights into regulatory and supervisory priorities and action.
We are looking for people who are curious, strategic and comfortable working with ambiguity. You will need to connect the dots across complex issues, bring people together around a clear direction and take work from early thinking through to tangible outcomes.
The team
Cross-Industry Risk Division brings together risk and system specialists who collaborate with frontline supervision and play a key role in identifying risks and trends across industries and the financial system.
The Cyber, Operational Resilience and AI Strategy team shapes APRA’s regulatory and supervisory strategy and response across cyber, operational resilience and AI. The team works across APRA to draw together expertise and insights, understand where risks are changing and drive coordinated action.
Key responsibilities
You will
- Shape APRA’s regulatory and supervisory strategy and response across cyber, operational resilience, AI and related emerging technology risks;
- Mobilise specialist and supervisory expertise from across APRA, building alignment on complex issues and driving coherent regulatory and supervisory responses;
- Lead complex, high-priority initiatives from early problem definition and analysis through to tangible outcomes;
- Identify emerging risks and vulnerabilities and determine their potential prudential implications for regulated entities, industries and the financial system;
- Use data, evidence and specialist expertise to understand changing risks and inform APRA’s priorities and decisions;
- Analyse developments in AI and other emerging technologies and their potential implications for APRA-regulated industries and the financial system;
- Translate complex and evolving issues into clear strategic options and practical regulatory and supervisory responses; and
- Engage and influence senior internal and external stakeholders.
About you
You will bring strong strategic and analytical capability, sound judgement and the ability to make progress on complex issues where the risks and appropriate regulatory responses are still evolving.
You will be comfortable working across organisational boundaries and able to bring together people with different expertise and perspectives, build alignment and drive work towards a clear outcome.
We are particularly interested in candidates with
- Experience in prudential or financial regulation, non-financial risk, regulatory strategy, cyber, AI, technology risk, data and analytics, or a related field;
- Demonstrated ability to mobilise diverse expertise and lead complex work across organisational boundaries, including where you do not have direct authority;
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to synthesise evidence, identify what matters and determine its strategic implications;
- Demonstrated ability to develop strategy and translate it into practical action;
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to provide clear advice and influence senior stakeholders; and
- Relevant tertiary qualifications or equivalent professional experience.
- A strong understanding of emerging technologies and/or strong data and analytical capability is highly desirable, particularly the ability to apply these capabilities to understand changing risks and their regulatory or supervisory implications.
