Senior DevOps Engineer

Sydney, Australia Hybrid Full-time

The job

As a Senior DevOps and Platform Automation Engineer, you will provide senior technical leadership across APRA’s data delivery platforms, engineering practices and secure software delivery lifecycle.

You will take a hands-on role in designing and improving cloud and on-premises automation, infrastructure as code, CI/CD pipelines, security controls, observability and operational resilience, with a particular focus on Microsoft Azure and Azure Databricks.

This is a great opportunity to turn high-level requirements into pragmatic, secure and supportable solutions, contribute confidently across architecture, cyber security, change and operational forums, and help teams navigate governance requirements without compromising delivery outcomes.

The team

You will join a data delivery team supporting APRA’s data platforms and modernisation agenda, including the migration of on-premises data capabilities to Azure Databricks.

The team works closely with data engineering, architecture, cyber security, infrastructure, testing, product and project teams to deliver secure, scalable and trusted technology solutions.

You will work in a collaborative and knowledge-sharing environment where you can influence engineering practices, introduce reusable standards and help build DevOps capability across APRA’s data delivery teams.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide hands-on technical leadership across DevOps, platform automation, CI/CD, infrastructure as code, release management and operational engineering.
  • Design, build and maintain secure, reusable automation across Microsoft Azure, Azure Databricks and on-premises environments.
  • Use Terraform and other appropriate tools to establish reusable infrastructure modules, standards, controls and review practices.
  • Guide the engineering approach for Databricks workspace and cloud resource provisioning, configuration, deployment, access controls and environment consistency.
  • Build and enhance CI/CD pipelines that automate build, testing, security assurance and deployment across the software delivery lifecycle.
  • Embed DevSecOps practices across repository governance, secure coding, vulnerability management, secrets management, security scanning and auditable release controls.
  • Improve platform reliability through monitoring, logging, alerting, performance management, self-healing patterns, disaster recovery and operational runbooks.
  • Translate complex business and technical requirements into secure, scalable, cost-effective and supportable solutions.
  • Work across architecture, cyber security, change and operational governance forums to support effective delivery outcomes.
  • Mentor engineers and other technical team members through coaching, pairing, practical knowledge sharing and the development of reusable engineering standards.
  • Identify and trial responsible uses of AI-assisted engineering to improve automation, code quality, testing, documentation, security analysis and team productivity.
  • Challenge inefficient practices constructively and drive improvements from initial concept through to sustainable business-as-usual operation.

About you

  • Experienced and hands-on DevOps, platform or cloud engineer who can combine deep technical expertise with sound judgement, initiative and clear communication.
  • Substantial experience in a senior DevOps, platform engineering, cloud engineering or infrastructure automation role.
  • Strong experience with Microsoft Azure, Azure DevOps and Git, including designing and operating enterprise-grade CI/CD pipelines.
  • Strong infrastructure-as-code experience, particularly with Terraform.
  • Experience provisioning and operating cloud data platforms, with Azure Databricks experience highly regarded.
  • Proficiency in automation and scripting using Python, PowerShell, Bash or similar languages.
  • Practical experience applying DevSecOps practices, including identity and access management, secrets management, vulnerability remediation, security scanning and controlled release processes.
  • Experience with container and orchestration technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes, which will be highly regarded.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to communicate technical recommendations to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated initiative, accountability and follow-through, including the confidence to propose improvements and lead them through governance and implementation.
  • Experience mentoring engineers and improving team practices without relying on formal people-management authority.
  • An interest in AI-enabled engineering and the judgement to evaluate and adopt new capabilities responsibly.
  • Experience using GitHub Copilot, Microsoft Copilot or Databricks AI capabilities is desirable but not essential.
  • To work with us, you need to be an Australian citizen with eligibility to obtain and maintain Australian Government Security clearance.
