Bauer Media Group Media/Entertainment

Technology and Engineering Apprentice

Remote Full-time

Bauer Media Audio is home to some of the UK's best-loved radio stations and podcasts. Every single time someone listens on their phone, in their car, or through a smart speaker, there's a whole team of engineers, developers and problem-solvers behind the scenes making that happen, instantly and reliably, for millions of people.

That's where you come in. We're looking for two Technology & Engineering Apprentices to join us in early 2027 on an 18-month programme. This isn't a role where you'll be stuck doing one job in one corner of the business. Instead, you'll rotate around several different teams that together build, run and maintain everything Bauer Media Audio does in tech… getting a genuine, full-circle view of how modern engineering works, from the cloud infrastructure underneath it all, right through to the apps and features that listeners use every day.

đź’ˇ Why this apprenticeship is unique!

You'll see the entire lifecycle of engineering and technology, not just one narrow slice of it. By the end of 18 months, you'll have touched cloud infrastructure, backend platforms, web and voice applications, mobile apps, architecture, and quality assurance. Few early-careers roles anywhere give you that breadth.

No previous professional experience is needed, this role is designed for people at the very start of their tech career. What matters far more than what you already know is how curious you are, how you approach a problem you've never seen before, whether you've got a genuine interest in how technology works, and that you have a passion for music.

Across your 18 months, you'll spend time embedded in the teams below. Each one plays a different part in getting Bauer's radio stations, podcasts and apps in front of listeners, and each one will teach you a different set of skills.

Platform Team

The engine room of Bauer's audio estate. This central team builds and maintains the backend platforms and services that power every Bauer radio station listened to on a digital or connected device, apps, smart speakers, you name it. It's a remote-first team, so if you've ever wondered what's happening behind an app or a stream, this is where you'd find out.

Web, Voice & Connected Devices Team

This team builds the customer-facing side of things for web, voice assistants and connected devices/speakers, using technologies like TypeScript, React and Next.js. They take what the Platform team builds and turn it into the products people use and see on screen.

Mobile Team

The team behind Bauer's highly rated mobile apps for Android (Kotlin) and iOS/Apple (SwiftUI), often the most visible part of the whole operation, since it's the bit sitting on listeners' phones. As the team will tell you themselves, mobile only works because of everything the other teams build underneath it.

Cloud & Infrastructure Team

This team provides cloud environments (predominantly AWS) and infrastructure-as-code (using tools like Terraform and GitHub Actions) that let every other engineering team do their job, and they automate as much of that as possible so everyone else can move faster.

Architecture Team

Where most teams focus on how to build something, Architecture focuses on why. This team thinks about early engagement, discovery, and the bigger-picture decisions, including knowing when the answer is 'no'. A great team for understanding the reasoning behind the technology choices Bauer makes.

Quality Assurance (QA) Team

QA is embedded across every team above and sits between the customer and the rest of engineering, the final check before anything goes live. QA takes a description of what's being built, imagines every way it could go right or wrong, and turns that into tests that make sure listeners get a product that works.

This is a technical apprenticeship, so we do need a genuine interest in IT or technology, you'll be learning real, technical skills (like cloud infrastructure or coding languages) that go beyond what you'd pick up at school, college or university. But we are not looking for finished experts. We're looking for the right mindset, and we'll teach you the rest.

The essentials

Curiosity & honesty: You ask questions when you're stuck, rather than staying quiet… nobody will ever be annoyed at you for asking, even if you ask the same thing twice.

Problem-solving: You like figuring out how things work and enjoy the process of digging into a tricky issue rather than panicking.

A head for figures:You’re comfortable with everyday mathematics and logical thinking. You enjoy using numbers to solve problems, can spot patterns and understand what a function is. You don’t need advanced maths qualifications, but you should be keen to develop these skills.

Natural interest in tech: A real interest in technology, computers, or how things work, enough that the technical side of the role excites you rather than overwhelms you.

Good communication & teamwork: You're comfortable working with others, sharing progress, and communicating clearly especially important as many of our teams work remotely.

Self-motivation: You're happy to go and learn something new yourself (using courses, documentation, or asking colleagues) rather than waiting to be told exactly what to do next.

Being a team player, not a 'hero': You take ownership without needing to be the hero. Our teams value people who collaborate and support each other over people trying to prove a point.

A Passion for music: You care about the experience we give our listeners and want to help them find the right audio for every moment. You don’t need to be an expert in every genre, but you should be excited by music, radio and podcasts, and curious about how technology brings them to millions of people.
