Who We Are

BioMarin is a leading rare disease biotechnology company focused on genetically defined conditions.

Guided by our purpose to develop medicines that make a profound impact on people’s lives, our global teams have delivered a portfolio of therapies since our founding in 1997. Our revolutionary treatments for conditions like achondroplasia (the most common form of dwarfism), PKU (phenylketonuria), CLN2, a form of Batten disease, and a number of forms of MPS (mucopolysaccharidosis) offer new possibilities for patients and families who previously had few, if any, available options.

More recently, with the close of the Amicus acquisition, our portfolio has expanded to include therapies for Fabry disease and Pompe disease, expanding our ability to reach more people living with rare genetic conditions.

Our success comes from our unwavering commitment to excellence, our deep understanding of patient needs, our scientific expertise, and our world-class manufacturing capabilities. At the heart of BioMarin is a dedicated team of the brightest minds in the industry working together to deliver innovative therapies to patients and families around the world.

These engineers, technicians, scientists and support staff build and maintain BioMarin’s cutting-edge manufacturing processes and sites, provide quality assurance and quality control to ensure we meet regulatory standards, and procure the needed goods and services to support manufacturing and coordinating the worldwide movement of our drugs to patients.

The Director, Regional Distribution & Logistics Leader, EUMEA is the accountable leader for the design, performance and transformation of the end-to-end distribution network serving Europe, the Middle East and Africa. The role sits on the Global Distribution & Trade leadership team and holds regional accountability across clinical, commercial and development-science product flows, from release at the manufacturing or contract site through to delivery at the customer, patient-facing provider or clinical site.

The scope of the role extends beyond hub operations. The Director owns the regional logistics service provider (LSP) network as a portfolio — and is accountable for how that network is structured, governed, contracted and continuously improved. The Director is expected to lead a multi-year transformation of the EUMEA distribution operating model and network design in support of the company's growth, portfolio expansion and new-market entry agenda, and to act as the single senior distribution partner to Regional Supply Chain, Commercial, Market Access, Quality, Regulatory, Finance, Trade Compliance and Technical Operations leadership in the region.

This is a leadership role in a highly regulated environment where decisions directly affect the continuity of supply of life-saving therapies. The Director is expected to set direction rather than execute to direction, to resolve issues at peer-leadership level without escalation, and to build the regional organisation and capability required for the future-state model.

Note that individual responsibilities may include all or part of the responsibilities defined below depending on individual experience and abilities, and may change to best support ongoing business needs.

Responsibilities

Network Design, Strategy & Business Model Transformation

Own the EUMEA distribution network strategy: define the future-state footprint, flow paths, inventory positioning, service tiers and channel model required to support portfolio growth, new launches, new market entry and evolving customer and patient-delivery models.

Lead the transformation of the regional distribution operating model — including make-versus-buy decisions, hub and satellite structure, direct-to-customer and direct-to-patient flows, and the transition from a hub-operations model to a governed multi-partner network.

Build and own the multi-year regional distribution roadmap, with a clearly articulated business case, benefit profile, investment requirement and delivery plan; secure endorsement through the appropriate governance forums.

Sponsor and direct network design analytics and scenario modelling (cost-to-serve, service, working capital, risk, carbon) to underpin design decisions, and translate the output into executable change.

Represent EUMEA in the design of the global distribution model, ensuring the region's requirements shape global standards, systems and processes rather than being managed as exceptions.

Lead the distribution workstream for regional business development activity, in-licensing, divestments and integrations, and for country entry and exit.

Logistics Service Provider (LSP) & Third-Party Network Ownership

Hold end-to-end accountability for the current regional 3PL, LSP and TSP network, as well as including new partnerships: strategy, segmentation, sourcing, selection, onboarding, qualification, performance governance, remediation and exit.

Lead the design and stand-up of the governance framework for the expanded partner network — tiered operating reviews, quarterly and annual business reviews, executive steering, escalation pathways and decision rights — and chair the senior-level forums.

Own the commercial relationship with regional partners in close collaboration with Regional Supply Chain, Procurement and Legal: negotiate and steward contracts, rate cards, service level agreements, quality agreements, incentive and remedy mechanisms, and manage the contract lifecycle.

Ensure clear articulation of Good Distribution Practice responsibilities, quality agreements, escalation routes and performance metrics across every external partner, in partnership with Supply Chain Quality.

Drive value from the partner base: cost-to-serve reduction, service improvement, network consolidation where appropriate, dual-sourcing and resilience, and joint continuous-improvement and innovation programmes.

Lead onboarding and integration of new partners and new flows into the network without disruption to supply, including validated shipping lanes, systems integration, data flows and business continuity provisions.

Enterprise Partnership & Stakeholder Leadership

Act as the senior distribution leader and single point of accountability for the EUMEA region, partnering directly with Commercial, Market Access, Medical, Quality, Regulatory, Finance, Trade Compliance, Regional Supply Chain and Clinical Supply Chain leadership.

Sit on the relevant regional and functional leadership teams; bring distribution insight into commercial planning, launch readiness, S&OP and long-range planning, and shape those plans rather than react to them.

Own distribution launch readiness for the region: represent Distribution on launch and country-entry teams, define the fulfilment model per market, and commit to and deliver the readiness plan.

Build senior external relationships with logistics partners, carriers, wholesalers, distributors, customers and, where relevant, regulators and industry bodies; represent the company externally on regional distribution matters.

Influence and secure alignment across the enterprise without direct authority, resolving competing priorities at peer level and escalating only genuine trade-off decisions.

Communicate the distribution vision, strategy and performance narrative credibly to executive audiences, including Executive Committee / regional leadership team level.

Operational, Quality & Compliance Accountability

Retain ultimate regional accountability for distribution and order fulfilment performance: order-to-delivery cycle time, on-time in-full, shipment integrity, temperature excursion rate, complaint and deviation performance, and customer service outcomes.

Ensure the network operates in full compliance with GDP, applicable national licensing and wholesale dealer requirements, trade and customs regulation, dangerous goods and cold-chain requirements, health and safety standards and internal policy.

Own the distribution risk profile for the region: risk identification and mitigation, business continuity and contingency planning, serialisation and traceability, product security and anti-diversion, and readiness for regulatory inspection and internal audit.

Act as regional escalation point and decision-maker for supply-critical events, temperature excursions, product holds, recalls and mock recalls, in partnership with Quality and Regulatory.

Oversee Distribution Requirements Planning (DRP) and inventory deployment for the regional network, balancing service, cost and expiry risk.

Own the digital and data agenda for regional distribution: system landscape (ERP / SAP, WMS, TMS, visibility and monitoring platforms), master data quality, control-tower capability and analytics; sponsor the deployment of new technology and automation.

Financial Ownership

  • Own the regional distribution and logistics budget: build the annual plan and long-range forecast, manage to plan, and deliver committed productivity and cost-to-serve targets.
  • Own the business case and capital request for network investment, and be accountable for realised benefit against approved cases.
  • Partner with Finance on cost-to-serve transparency, freight and distribution cost drivers, accruals, and the financial impact of network design decisions.
  • Partner with Procurement on the regional logistics category strategy, sourcing events and supplier value delivery.

Organisational Leadership & Talent

Lead, structure and develop the EUMEA distribution organisation; design the organisation required by the future-state model and manage the transition to it.

Build capability in network design, partner governance, data and analytics, and change leadership within the team; develop successors and a pipeline of talent for the wider function.

Set performance and development standards, manage performance, and create an inclusive, high-accountability, patient-focused culture.

As a member of the Global Distribution & Trade leadership team, contribute to functional strategy, resourcing, budget and talent decisions beyond own region, and lead or sponsor global initiatives.

Lead change: define and communicate the vision for the region, bring the organisation and external partners through significant model change, and sustain engagement through ambiguity.

Scope

This role is accountable for the compliant and reliable movement of life-saving therapies across the EUMEA region. Decisions made in this role are of critical nature in mitigating risk to the business, to regulatory standing and to continuity of supply to patients.

Geography: Multiple markets across Europe, Middle East and Africa, including direct, distributor, tender and named-patient / early-access channels.

Third-party network: logistics service providers, carriers and regional and in-market storage locations.

Financial: direct budget accountability; influence total regional cost-to-serve.

People: direct reports, total organisation, and contracted workers operating on the company's behalf.

Attributes required

A firm commitment to the company's cultural beliefs and values.

Consistent track record of exceeding objectives in roles of increasing leadership complexity.

Ability to set direction and achieve results through others, including without direct reporting lines and through external partners.

Executive presence and credibility with senior internal and external stakeholders; able to synthesise complexity into clear recommendations and decisions.

Strong strategic and commercial judgement combined with the operational depth to be credible on detail.

High level of accountability and a demonstrated ability to act as a change agent in a highly regulated industry.

Comfort with ambiguity, competing priorities and constant change without losing sight of the overall business.

Proactive and energetic outlook with an unwillingness to accept the status quo.

Decision Rights

  • The role holder is expected to decide, without escalation, on:
  • Regional network design and flow-path changes within an approved strategy and budget envelope.
  • LSP performance management actions, remediation plans, and allocation of volume within the qualified partner base.
  • Supply-critical event response for the region, including hold, re-route and expedite decisions.
  • Regional organisation design, resourcing and talent decisions within approved headcount.

Experience

  • Demonstrated accountability for a multi-country distribution network, including ownership of the third-party network rather than oversight of a single site or provider.
  • Proven experience sourcing, negotiating, onboarding and governing 3PL / LSP partnerships at contract-owner level, including performance remediation and provider transition.
  • Track record of leading supply chain or distribution transformation: network redesign, operating model change, system implementation or major service transition, delivered with measurable benefit.
  • Experience operating as the senior functional partner to commercial and regional leadership, including at launch and in new market entry.
  • Deep working knowledge of GDP, wholesale distribution licensing, cold chain and ambient distribution, trade compliance, import / export and customs, and dangerous goods requirements across EMEA.
  • Cold chain, cryogenic, biologics and / or advanced therapy (cell and gene) distribution experience highly desirable.
  • Experience leading regulatory inspections or audits covering distribution and third-party partners.
  • Strong financial literacy: budget ownership, business case development, cost-to-serve and productivity delivery.
  • Fluency with SAP or equivalent ERP, WMS / TMS, visibility and monitoring platforms, and analytics tooling such as Power BI; familiarity with automation, control-tower and AI-enabled supply chain applications.
  • Business fluent in English; additional European languages advantageous.
