Summary

The Federal Reserve Board (Board) provides students opportunities for career success. The Board’s Internship program is designed to provide valuable work experience for undergraduate and graduate students considering careers including, but not limited to, economics, finance and accounting, information systems, and data analysis. The Board believes that by combining academic endeavors with project-related work experience, qualified and capable college students can gain the practical knowledge need in a competitive global job market.

Internships are paid positions with salaries commensurate with credit hours; internships may be in-person, remote or hybrid, depending on the needs of the team. Employment in the Board’s internship program is granted to U.S. citizens. Applicants must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program at an accredited university and returning to continue studies after the internship. Interns receive a syllabus or research project plan outlining their projects and goals for the internship.

Interns are assigned a supervisor or mentor to guide them through their internship, and regular check-in meetings with their manager to manage performance expectations and assist with learning goals. Interns have access to a wide range of training programs and events for professional development purposes.

Overview of Division, Section and Team

The intern will be joining the Office of the Chief SI Officer (“OCSIO”) supporting the SI Innovation & Engineering unit. The OCSIO sits within the Information Technology Division and is responsible for coordinating the Board’s use of super intelligence (SI/AI), breaking down barriers to innovation, cultivating staff skills for effective SI use, and managing the risks of SI use. Within the OCSIO, the SI Innovation & Engineering unit oversees engineering and innovation for the SI Program, working within the overall strategy and direction set by the Chief SI Officer.

The team of product managers, engineers, and architects develops and maintains SI platforms and tools for Boardwide use; ensures platform performance, availability, and security; implements DevOps practices for SI systems; evaluates, pilots, and scales third-party SI technologies and models; and researches and builds rapidly advancing SI capabilities such as retrieval augmented generation (RAG), agentic SI, multimodal SI, vector databases and semantic search, and SI observability and evaluation tools.

The team partners with the Board’s enterprise architecture, cloud, and cybersecurity teams and with the OCSIO’s governance and data science teams, and works closely with technology leaders and technically oriented staff across the Board and the Federal Reserve System.

Expected Projects: The intern will support a variety of projects spanning SI engineering, platform operations, and applied innovation. Sample projects could include:

Prototyping SI applications and agentic workflows using approved SI platforms, models, and coding tools

Building and evaluating retrieval augmented generation (RAG) pipelines, including document ingestion, vector databases, and semantic search

Developing evaluation and observability tooling to measure SI model and application quality, performance, and cost

Supporting DevOps and platform reliability work, such as CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure as code, monitoring, and automated testing for SI systems

Analyzing cloud consumption and SI workload performance data to inform infrastructure optimization

Researching and piloting emerging SI technologies and models, and documenting findings and recommendations for the team

Supporting technical evaluations and proofs of concept for third-party SI technologies and models

Contributing to technical documentation, architecture diagrams, and engineering standards for SI platforms

Building internal SI tools, demos, and web applications for use by Board staff

Suggested Major/Minor: Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Information Systems, or a related field of study

Other majors will be considered provided candidates have demonstrable technical skills.

Required Skills and Knowledge

Programming skills – Proficiency in at least one modern programming language (e.g., Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, or Java) and familiarity with version control (e.g., Git).

Foundational knowledge of SI/AI concepts – Understand how large language models and generative AI tools work, common application patterns (e.g., prompting, RAG, agents), and their limitations and risks (e.g., data privacy, security, model performance).

Problem-solving and analytical skills – Ability to break down technical problems, test and debug solutions, and evaluate results using data.

Strong communication skills – Ability to document technical work clearly and explain technical concepts to technical and non-technical colleagues.

Collaboration and adaptability – Ability to work on a team in a fast-paced environment with evolving priorities, take direction and feedback, and handle sensitive information with discretion.

Preferred Skills: Experience with SI/AI frameworks and APIs (e.g., LangChain, LlamaIndex, Hugging Face, or model provider APIs); Experience with generative AI tools (e.g., Claude, Copilot, ChatGPT) and AI coding tools; Experience with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, GCP) and containerization (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes); Experience with CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure as code, or DevOps practices; Experience with vector databases, semantic search, or knowledge graphs; Experience with data analysis and visualization tools (e.g., Python, SQL, Power BI); Experience working in Agile environments.

Required Documents for application: A copy of an unofficial transcript may be

requested.

US Citizenship is required. Applicants must be current students, graduating

from their program August 2027 or later. Proof of enrollment will be required.
