Role overview
We are looking for a Content Engineer to help operate and improve the systems and workflows that power CarGurus content.
This is a content-operations role with strong technical fluency. You will manage structured content in our headless CMS and related databases, coordinate multiple workflows for producing and updating content, and help ensure that every workflow produces accurate, useful, on-brand, and search-friendly work. You will work closely with editors, SEO partners, engineers, analysts, and other stakeholders to turn content requirements into repeatable processes.
You do not need to be a traditional software engineer. You should be comfortable learning technical systems, working with structured data, troubleshooting workflow issues, and using tools such as AirOps and LLM-based content workflows to improve the speed and quality of production.
What you’ll do
Manage and maintain a structured database of content, including records, fields, statuses, metadata, templates, relationships, and update schedules.
Operate day-to-day publishing and refresh workflows across multiple content types, markets, and production queues.
Coordinate work from intake through review, revision, approval, publishing, and post-publication quality checks.
Configure and maintain Contentful models, entries, templates, and workflow states within established standards.
Use AirOps, LLM tools, and related AI-assisted workflows to support content creation, enrichment, updating, and quality control.
Review generated or data-informed content for accuracy, completeness, clarity, consistency, brand voice, and usefulness to car shoppers.
Monitor workflow output and investigate issues such as missing data, incorrect formatting, duplicate records, broken links, stale content, or failed production steps.
Track answer-engine optimization (AEO) performance and citation visibility across AI and LLM search experiences; monitor where and how CarGurus content is cited, and use citation data to improve briefs, content structure, internal linking, prompts, and workflow outputs.
Partner with editors and SEO stakeholders to translate briefs, content standards, and search intent into clear workflow requirements.
Maintain production trackers, documentation, QA checklists, and process guides so that work is visible, repeatable, and easy for others to follow.
Identify recurring friction or quality issues and recommend practical improvements to templates, prompts, validations, queue design, and operating procedures.
Support testing of new content formats, data sources, and workflow changes; document results and help determine whether successful approaches should be expanded.
What success looks like
In your first year, you will
- Keep assigned content databases accurate, organized, and up to date.
- Run multiple content-production and refresh workflows reliably against agreed timelines.
- Catch and resolve quality issues before they reach customers, or escalate them with clear context when they require another team’s support.
- Improve the consistency, efficiency, or scalability of at least several recurring content processes.
- Build trust with editorial, SEO, engineering, analytics, and other partners by communicating clearly and following work through to completion.
- Help the team increase content output without compromising accuracy, usefulness, differentiation, or brand standards.
What you’ll bring
- Experience in editorial operations, content operations, content management, publishing, SEO content, digital production, or a related field.
- Strong technical fluency and the ability to learn unfamiliar systems quickly.
- Experience managing structured content, databases, spreadsheets, CMS platforms, workflow tools, or production queues.
- A careful, methodical approach to data quality, content QA, and troubleshooting.
- Experience coordinating multiple projects or workflows with competing deadlines and dependencies.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain technical or process issues to nontechnical partners.
- Good editorial judgment and a clear understanding of what makes content accurate, useful, readable, and consistent.
- Comfort working with AI-assisted content tools while applying human review, fact checking, and quality standards.
- The ability to work independently on varied, routine-to-moderately complex problems and to ask for help or escalate issues when appropriate.
- Helpful experience
- Contentful or another structured content management system.
- AirOps, LLM tools, prompt-based workflows, or other AI-assisted content-production systems.
- Content modeling, metadata management, taxonomy, templating, or database cleanup.
- SEO fundamentals, search intent, internal linking, structured data, or content performance reporting.
- Light scripting, spreadsheet automation, API-based workflows, or no-code/low-code tools.
- Experience working with automotive content, ecommerce content, marketplace data, or other high-volume structured content.
- Genuine interest in cars, automotive technology, or helping people make informed car-buying decisions.
- The displayed range represents the expected annual base salary / On-Target Earnings (OTE) for this position. On-Target Earnings (OTE) is inclusive of base salary and on-target commission earnings, which applies exclusively to sales roles.
- Individual pay within this range is determined by work location and other factors such as job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
- This annual base salary forms part of a comprehensive Total Rewards Package. In addition to benefits, this role may qualify for discretionary bonuses/incentives and Restricted Stock Units (RSUs).
