Analytics & Insights Analyst

London, United Kingdom Hybrid Full-time

Location: UK - London

Why Catalina?

Catalina UK is the leading multi-channel shopper activation business and has created a Retail Centre of Excellence which has consistently been awarded one of the UK’s ‘Great Places to Work’. We are passionate about transforming data into insights, and insights into action through a seamless consumer experience that drives results for our Retail customers and their CPG partners. Our sole mission is to convert shoppers into buyers, and buyers into loyal fans so that we are the UK Retailers’ partner of choice for shopper engagement and loyalty.

The role

You will own day-to-day Analytics delivery for Catalina’s Sainsbury’s account and proactively uncover insight that helps Commercial create stronger client conversations and new opportunities. By understanding the business, shopper behaviour and the wider retail market, you will spot patterns, challenge assumptions and bring useful nuggets, pitch hooks and new ideas to the team. You will stay close to upcoming meetings and pitches and turn discoveries into checked evidence and recommendations.

Your remit covers the account’s data and insight offering, including Power BI, reporting, targeting, segmentation and measurement. You will help Commercial use these capabilities confidently through coaching and practical workshops. You will work independently within agreed priorities, with support from the Head of Analytics for strategic direction and escalation.

The role sits within the Analytics & Insights function as part of a two-person team, alongside the Head of Analytics & Insights, to whom this role reports.

Key responsibilities

  • Build a deep understanding of Sainsbury’s business priorities, Catalina’s offering and the retail and loyalty market. Stay close to Commercial’s pipeline, upcoming client meetings and pitches so your analysis addresses opportunities that matter.
  • Proactively uncover commercial opportunities. Explore shopper and campaign data from different angles, including segments, categories, stores and trends over time. Bring evidence-backed nuggets, pitch hooks and new ideas to Commercial, with a clear recommendation or test.
  • Own the account’s business-facing data and insight offering. Develop useful reports, data outputs and analysis; maintain clear metric definitions; encourage self-service; and help colleagues choose the right evidence for their questions.
  • Lead Power BI delivery. Build and improve models, Power Query transformations, DAX measures and reports; monitor refreshes and data quality; investigate issues with technical colleagues; and guide users in interpreting results.
  • Coach Commercial on targeting, segmentation and measurement. Help shape audience and targeting briefs, eligibility and exclusion rules, test and control approaches and success measures. Run practical workshops and create reusable guidance.
  • Deliver targeting and performance analysis across the Sainsbury’s account, including My Favourite Deals and Nectar360 activity. Validate outputs and explain customer behaviour, campaign results and incremental impact, with clear limitations.
  • Turn discoveries into a clear client story. Equip Commercial with compelling evidence, pitch hooks, recommendations and reusable examples for proposals and performance reviews. Join client conversations and help turn promising findings into practical next steps.
  • Own account analytics requests from the initial question through to a checked result. Coordinate delivery with offshore analysts, agree priorities and timescales, communicate progress and raise material risks early.

Supporting the wider Analytics team

Understand the ETL, scheduled jobs, file transfers, BAU checks and automation behind the account’s data. Work with offshore analysts, Operations and IT to keep delivery reliable, investigate data or reporting problems and step in when essential work needs cover. Help with ad hoc Sales and Operations requests, improve repeatable checks or scripts, and document changes so others can support them.

Qualifications – what you bring

  • Strong practical Power BI experience, including data modelling, Power Query, DAX, report design and refresh troubleshooting, with the ability to help others use it confidently.
  • Working proficiency in at least one of Python or SQL for extracting, checking, transforming and analysing data.
  • Sound analytical judgement: you can investigate unexpected results, question assumptions, validate your work and connect findings to a useful recommendation.
  • Clear storytelling and communication, with the confidence to explain analysis, coach nontechnical colleagues and contribute to client discussions.
  • An independent, curious approach. You develop your own questions, explore alternative explanations, follow interesting patterns and challenge familiar assumptions. You keep learning and turn ideas into useful, checked analysis.
  • Commercial awareness and strong working relationships. You understand client priorities, recognise what could make a useful pitch or recommendation, and help Commercial turn insight into action.
  • An understanding of data flows and quality checks, and a willingness to learn the account’s operational processes and help when delivery needs support.

Useful additional experience

  • Practical experience with both Python and SQL.
  • Rundeck, VS Code, ETL, data warehouses, Git, DevOps or automation.
  • Retail, loyalty or campaign analytics, including segmentation, targeting and test and control measurement.
  • Client presentations, commercial pitches, training or analytical workshops.
  • Data science or statistical methods, and curiosity about practical uses of AI in analysis, reporting and automation.

What success looks like

Within six months, Commercial sees you as its trusted Analytics partner for Sainsbury’s and receives a regular flow of evidence-backed insights and opportunities. Your discoveries provide hooks for client conversations, pitches and test ideas. Priority reporting is dependable, colleagues are more confident with targeting and measurement, and you coordinate routine delivery with offshore support. You understand the data processes well enough to investigate issues and improve reliability.
