The Digital S/W Engineer Sr Analyst Shape, build, and govern high-impact API solutions as a Senior Systems Engineer, sitting at the intersection of hands-on Apigee development and API design leadership within Citi's Digital Engineering organization. In this hybrid technical role, you will both develop and configure production API solutions on Google Apigee and lead the design and specification of API interfaces and integration patterns — owning mid-size features end-to-end from architecture through deployment, while contributing to larger platform initiatives.
You will be equally comfortable configuring Apigee proxies and policies as you are producing API design artefacts, leading design reviews, and governing integration standards. This role sits within Citi's Wealth Digital engineering team, where your contributions will directly shape API quality, security posture, and delivery outcomes at scale.
Responsibilities
Apigee
- Design and configure API proxies on Google Apigee, including proxy configurations, flow definitions, route rules, and target endpoint setup.
- Define and maintain Apigee policies — including traffic management (quota, spike arrest, rate limiting), mediation (JSON-to-XML, message transformation), and security (OAuth, API key validation, JWT verification) policies.
- Implement OAuth 2.0 and OpenID Connect (OIDC) authorization flows natively within Apigee, including authorization code, client credentials, and token introspection patterns.
- Configure and manage Apigee environments, API products, developer portals, and monetization configurations in line with platform governance standards.
- Integrate Apigee with backend services, identity providers, and downstream systems through secure, performant target configurations.
API Design & Governance
- Lead the design and specification of RESTful APIs, producing OpenAPI/Swagger documentation, API contracts, and integration specifications that engineering teams implement against.
- Apply Financial-grade API (FAPI) security profiles in both API design specifications and Apigee proxy configurations to protect sensitive financial data exchanges.
- Apply knowledge of Open Banking regulations (e.g., PSD2, CDR, Section 1033) to design and build compliant, interoperable API interfaces on the Apigee platform.
- Define and enforce API design standards and governance guidelines, governing APIGEE Products and Proxies ,including naming conventions, versioning strategies, error response schemas, and pagination patterns.
- Facilitate and lead API design reviews and architecture walkthroughs, providing well-reasoned recommendations that guide engineering implementation decisions.
- Produce technical diagrams — sequence diagrams, flow diagrams, and system context maps — to document API behavior, data flows, Apigee policy execution, and integration touchpoints.
Leadership & Collaboration
- Communicate technical progress and risks proactively across engineering and product teams, managing competing priorities and keeping stakeholders aligned.
- Review delivery and API quality metrics regularly, identifying opportunities to improve development workflows, proxy performance, and governance processes.
- Mentor and upskill junior engineers through code reviews, proxy design walkthroughs, and structured knowledge-sharing sessions.
- Evaluate technical and business risk in design and implementation decisions, escalating issues with transparency to protect Citi and its clients.
Required Qualifications & Skills
- 8–10 years of experience in a product development, engineering, or technology product management environment, including 3+ years of hands-on experience designing and configuring APIs on Google Apigee (proxies, flow configurations, policy chaining, shared flows, and target endpoints).
- Advanced expertise in RESTful API design & architecture, OpenAPI 3.x specification authoring, and enterprise integration patterns.
- Deep knowledge of API security & identity standards, including OAuth 2.0 (OAuthV2 policies, Client Credentials), OpenID Connect (OIDC), and Financial-grade API (FAPI) security profiles across API contracts and Apigee configurations.
- Strong understanding of Open Banking regulations (e.g., PSD2, CFPB Section 1033) and global data privacy frameworks (e.g., GDPR, CCPA) to ensure compliant, interoperable interface design.
- Skilled in vendor and partner management, effectively collaborating with third-party service providers to evaluate tools and drive solution delivery.
- Hands-on delivery in Agile environments, applying Scrum/Kanban practices to lead cross-functional sprint teams from concept through deployment.
- Strong analytical and quantitative problem-solving skills, with a data-driven, results-oriented approach to resolving complex system challenges and optimizing delivery metrics.
- Working familiarity with AI-assisted engineering tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, Devin.AI) and prompt engineering methodologies to improve design velocity and documentation quality.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with proven capability to influence both senior technical and business stakeholders, articulate technical trade-offs, and mentor junior engineers through code reviews and design walkthroughs.
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
