The Department of Population Health & Policy at City St George’s, University of London, is seeking a Research Fellow in Spatial Epidemiology to join Dr Honor Bixby’s group in the HEDGE Centre. Funded by an Academy of Medical Sciences Springboard award, the project will identify where, and who, is being left behind amid major gains in child survival in sub-Saharan African cities, using Ghana as a case study. Partners include the University of Ghana, the Ghana Statistical Service and McGill University.

The post holder will lead the project’s day-to-day activities, data management and statistical analysis. This includes developing Bayesian spatial models that pool geo-located census and survey data to map under-five mortality at neighbourhood level across Ghana’s major cities, and assessing how geographic and socioeconomic inequalities have changed over time. They will harmonise and manage large datasets, oversee day-to-day project delivery, liaise with international partners, keep complete records of analyses in line with open science practices, and contribute to peer-reviewed publications and reports to the funder.

We are looking for a highly pro-active, critically-minded researcher with a PhD in epidemiology, statistics, quantitative demography or a closely related discipline, and experience of advanced statistical analysis, data management and publishing in peer-reviewed journals. Knowledge of applied Bayesian spatial analysis (e.g. NIMBLE or Stan), the ability to analyse geo-coded and/or complex survey data, and proficiency in R are essential. You will have excellent communication and organisational skills, meticulous attention to detail and a commitment to open, reproducible science. Experience of working with international collaborators is desirable.

This role is permanent subject to fixed term funding for 7 months. This post is offered on a permanent contract, reflecting the University’s commitment to providing greater stability for research staff. The role is funded through external research funding, which is currently confirmed for 7 months. Part-time working (minimum 3 days per week) will be considered.
