See yourself in our team
Economic Crime Risk (ECR) sits within CBA’s Risk Management function and is responsible for setting the strategy, frameworks and oversight that protect the Group, our customers and the community from financial crime, fraud and scams.
A critical part of this accountability is ensuring that ECR-owned models are effectively governed, continuously monitored and operating within risk appetite throughout their lifecycle. The ECR Model Risk & Governance team ensures our Financial Crime and Fraud models are well controlled, compliant with the Group Model Risk Management Framework and supported by strong, consistent governance practices - so they remain fit for purpose in a rapidly evolving economic crime environment.
What your role will involve
Reporting to the Executive Manager, ECR Model Risk & Governance, you will help lead model risk and governance across all ECR-owned models spanning Financial Crime and Fraud. You will make sure required controls are executed, model performance and risks are visible, and issues are surfaced and actioned early.
You will be the day-to-day connection point between model owners, developers, independent validators and the central Model Risk and Model Policy governance teams - running the governance rhythm, preparing clear reporting and dashboards, and facilitating governance sessions with senior stakeholders.
This is a hands-on role that combines governance discipline with practical analytical capability. You won’t need to build models, but you will need enough data science understanding to read model documentation, interpret performance results and ask the right questions.
On any given day, you will
Govern the model suite
Maintain an accurate, current view of all ECR-owned Financial Crime and Fraud models, ensuring Group Model Register (GMR) records are complete, current and reflect each model’s lifecycle status
Coordinate scheduled governance activity; fit-for-purpose reviews, model risk assessments, performance monitoring reviews, validations and approvals - keeping model owners ahead of due dates
Ensure models remain compliant with the Group Model Risk Management Framework and supporting standards, with required controls executed and evidenced
Track open model risk findings, actions and risk acceptances, driving timely and well-evidenced closure with model owners
Partner across the model lifecycle
Work closely with model owners, developers and validators to support validations, fit-for-purpose reviews and remediation activity
Engage with the central Model Risk and Model Policy governance teams to ensure alignment to policy, standards and governance expectations
Review model documentation, performance results and monitoring outcomes, and provide constructive challenge on performance, drift, limitations and remediation plans
Run governance and reporting
Plan, prepare and facilitate regular governance sessions with senior stakeholders, including agendas, papers, decisions and action tracking
Build and maintain dashboards and reporting (e.g. Power BI) on model estate health, findings, upcoming obligations and model performance
Translate technical model outcomes into clear, decision-ready insights for ECR leadership and governance committees
Support internal audit, assurance and regulatory reviews with robust, audit-ready outputs
Build model risk and governance maturity
Establish consistent governance rhythms, reporting cycles and escalation pathways
Uplift governance processes, templates and documentation to improve scalability and consistency, without adding unnecessary bureaucracy
Identify control gaps or emerging model issues early and ensure they are raised, rated and managed in line with Group issue management standards
Help build artefacts that build the maturity of the function, e.g. playbooks, checklists, guidelines, Standard operating Procedures, etc.
Support the Executive Manager across the model governance agenda, representing the team in working groups and forums as required
We’re interested in hearing from people who have
Exposure to model governance, model risk management, model validation or risk and control roles, ideally within financial services
An understanding of Financial Crime and/or Fraud — for example transaction monitoring, customer risk assessment, screening, or fraud and scam detection
Basic data science knowledge, including common model performance measures (e.g. precision, recall, false positives), drift and stability concepts, and the ability to read and question model documentation
Experience working closely with model owners, developers, validators and model risk or policy governance teams
Confidence preparing papers and running governance sessions with senior stakeholders, including tracking decisions and actions through to closure
Strong organisation and follow-through across a complex portfolio of models, findings and deadlines
Clear written and verbal communication, and the confidence to challenge constructively
Highly regarded
Experience building dashboards and reporting using Power BI or similar tools
Familiarity with CBA (or equivalent) Model Risk Management frameworks, the Group Model Register and model governance forums
Working knowledge of SQL and/or Python
Tertiary qualifications in a quantitative, risk or related discipline, and/or financial crime credentials such as CAMS
From here, the opportunities are endless
This is a highly visible role at the center of how ECR governs its Financial Crime and Fraud models. You will gain broad exposure to senior stakeholders, governance committees and enterprise model governance functions across the Group.
As the function grows, this role offers a clear development pathway — building the judgement, stakeholder presence and leadership to take on greater ownership of the model governance portfolio over time.
