Build and evolve the platforms behind digital banking experiences used by millions of customers
Lead the design and delivery of secure, scalable and resilient services and APIs
Help shape engineering standards and technical practices across the squad and beyond
Do work that matters
We're building digital banking experiences that help millions of Australians manage their money and stay in control of their relationship with the bank. Behind every screen sit services, APIs and platforms that must be fast, secure and reliable at scale.
As a Staff Software Engineer, you'll combine deep hands-on engineering with technical leadership. You'll solve complex problems, set the technical direction for your squad and raise the bar for the engineers around you.
See yourself in our team
You'll join a cross-functional squad of engineers, product owners and designers within Digital. The squad owns its customer experiences end to end, from the app and web front ends to the backend services and APIs behind them.
You'll work closely with mobile, web and backend engineers and with partner teams. You'll lead within your squad and share patterns and practices that lift capability across the wider crew. You will:
Deliver customer excellence: Design and build services, APIs and experiences that make banking simpler, safer and better, using customer insight to shape technical decisions
Lead as an owner: Own your code from design through to production, including testing, release and how it runs in production. Make timely calls when conditions aren't perfect, and manage risk actively
Build with GraphQL and subgraphs: Design, build and evolve GraphQL subgraphs and schemas that power customer experiences, and keep them performant and reliable as more teams build on them
Stay hands-on: Contribute to critical implementation while leading technical design and breaking large problems into pieces that can be delivered safely
Set the technical direction: Guide architecture across multiple services and help guide architecture on the native mobile side. Introduce patterns and frameworks that improve scalability, maintainability and performance
Create exceptional teams: Mentor engineers across squads, review code with candid feedback and build an environment where people can speak up and challenge constructively
Raise engineering practice: Drive improvements in automated testing, CI/CD, observability and automation to reduce operational toil
Engineer with AI: Use agentic engineering, prompt engineering and AI agent-first development to build products faster and to a higher standard. Keep learning the latest AI trends and tools, and help the team build the same capability
We’re interested in hearing from people who
Have a strong track record of designing, building and running large-scale, customer-facing or business-critical systems in production
Take full ownership of what they build, from the first line of code through testing, release and production support
Test their own work thoroughly and treat quality as part of the job, not a separate stage
Are comfortable working in a monorepo alongside a microservices architecture, where changes must be made carefully and with others in mind
Can navigate ambiguity, challenge assumptions and turn complex problems into pragmatic solutions
Balance deep hands-on contribution with technical leadership, and influence without formal authority
Communicate clearly and with empathy, and take accountability beyond their immediate team
Enjoy mentoring others and holding themselves and others to a high standard
Technical background
You don't need experience across our entire stack. Strong fundamentals and the ability to learn matter more than matching every technology. Experience in some of the following would be beneficial:
Backend: .NET / C#, Java, Node.js or comparable technologies
GraphQL & subgraphs: Schema design, resolvers, federated or subgraph architectures, and performance considerations at scale
Front end / web: React, TypeScript, Next.js
Architecture: Microservices, distributed systems, event-driven architecture (Kafka), monorepo and challenges
APIs & integration: REST, GraphQL, asynchronous messaging
Testing: Unit, integration and end-to-end testing, plus performance and non-functional testing
Mobile: Awareness of native iOS (Swift) and Android (Kotlin) architecture
Cloud & infrastructure: AWS, Docker, Kubernetes, Infrastructure as Code
DevOps: CI/CD (GitHub Actions, Jenkins), automation, modern deployment practices
