Product Lead, Lumen Tooling

Sydney, Australia In person Full-time

Location: Sydney CBD Area

The opportunity

What if the distance between an idea and a production-ready experience could dramatically shrink?

The way digital products are designed and built is changing quickly.

AI, agents, generative interfaces and new design-to-code capabilities are beginning to blur the traditional boundaries between design and engineering. Prototypes can become working software. Design systems can become machine-readable context. And increasingly, designers and engineers can move from intent to high-quality UI in entirely new ways.

Lumen Tooling exists to reimagine how we design and build digital experiences.

Lumen is CommBank’s design system. Today, it provides the foundations, components and standards that help our teams create consistent, accessible and high-quality experiences at scale.

The next evolution is to make those foundations useful not only to people, but to machines.

We’re looking for a Product Lead to shape that future.

You’ll lead the product strategy for the tools, workflows and machine-readable foundations that help our designers and engineers move from idea → prototype → production faster and with greater confidence.

That could mean better design-to-code workflows. New ways to rapidly prototype with real Lumen components. AI-powered tools that understand our design system. Reusable skills and agents that help teams build UI. Or capabilities we haven’t imagined yet.

This isn’t about adding AI to existing workflows. It’s an opportunity to fundamentally rethink them.

What you’ll do

You’ll set the product vision and strategy for Lumen Tooling and lead one of the most important questions facing our design and engineering community:

How should digital experiences be designed and built when people and AI are creating them together?

You’ll

Reimagine the path from idea to production. Understand where designers and engineers lose time, context or quality today and identify opportunities to fundamentally simplify how UI gets created.

Make Lumen machine-ready. Shape how our design tokens, components, patterns, guidance and other foundations evolve so they can be reliably understood, reasoned about and used by AI.

Create the next generation of design-to-code. Explore how we can reduce the gap between design intent and production implementation while preserving the quality, accessibility and consistency Lumen provides.

Unlock rapid prototyping. Give teams ways to move from an idea to a realistic, interactive experience quickly, using the same foundations that ultimately power production.

Explore AI-native workflows. Identify where AI, agents and reusable skills can materially improve how designers and engineers work – from generating and iterating UI to understanding patterns, solving implementation problems and validating quality.

Build for designers and engineers. Spend time deeply understanding how our teams work, where friction exists and what would make a meaningful difference to their everyday experience.

Experiment quickly. Prototype new tools and workflows, put them into the hands of teams and use real behaviour and feedback to determine where to invest.

Turn experiments into products. Take the strongest ideas beyond demos and pilots, building the reliability, trust and integration required for them to become part of how CommBank works.

Measure the change. Establish meaningful measures across speed, adoption, quality, satisfaction and impact, and use them to guide priorities and investment.

Create alignment around the future. Bring Design, Engineering and Product together around a shared view of how our workflows need to evolve and the role Lumen can play in enabling that change.

What success looks like

Success isn’t simply shipping more tools.

It’s materially changing how quickly and confidently teams can turn an idea into a great customer experience.

You’ll know we’re succeeding when

  • Designers and engineers can move from an idea to working, high-quality UI significantly faster and with less manual effort.
  • Teams can rapidly prototype realistic experiences using Lumen, shortening the distance between an idea and customer learning.
  • The handoff between design and engineering increasingly becomes a continuous workflow rather than a translation exercise.
  • Lumen can be reliably understood and used by AI, with its components, patterns and standards providing trusted context for machines as well as people.
  • AI-powered tools, agents and skills solve meaningful problems in teams’ everyday workflows rather than remaining interesting experiments.
  • Teams spend less time recreating, translating and correcting UI – and more time solving customer problems.
  • What we build is trusted enough that designers and engineers choose to use it.
  • We can demonstrate improvements not just in speed, but in the quality, consistency and accessibility of what ultimately reaches customers.

What you’ll bring

We’re looking for someone excited by the idea that the way software is created may change substantially over the next few years – and who wants to help shape that change rather than wait for it to happen.

You’ll bring

  • A strong track record leading digital products, platforms or developer/design tooling from discovery through delivery, adoption and continuous improvement.
  • Excellent product judgement – particularly the ability to navigate an emerging space, separate durable opportunities from hype and make thoughtful bets when the answer isn’t obvious.
  • The ability to create an ambitious product vision and turn it into a focused strategy, roadmap and sequence of experiments.
  • A strong understanding of design systems and how tokens, components, patterns and code come together to create digital experiences.
  • An understanding of the workflows designers and front-end engineers use to move from concept to production.
  • Genuine curiosity about AI and emerging developer and design tooling, with a developing point of view on how these technologies could reshape how digital products are created.
  • Strong discovery and experimentation skills and a bias toward putting useful things in people’s hands to learn quickly.
  • Enough technical fluency to work deeply with designers and engineers, ask good questions and understand the trade-offs involved in building tools they can trust.
  • An appreciation that speed alone isn’t the goal – quality, accessibility, consistency and maintainability still matter.
  • The ability to build relationships, influence across organisational boundaries and bring people together around an emerging product direction.
  • You may have come to product leadership through Product, Design or Engineering. Experience building design systems, developer platforms, internal tooling, AI products or products for technical users would be valuable.
  • More important is your ability to understand how people work today, imagine a radically better way of working tomorrow, and build products that make that change real.
  • We look forward to hearing from you !
