A bit about us

x15ventures is CommBank’s venture-building arm. Our AI Venturing team brings product judgement and deep engineering to focused missions across the portfolio, turning hard venture problems and emerging AI capabilities into products people use.

One mission might be to build an AI-native customer operations capability that adapts to different venture contexts and requirements, then scales across the portfolio. The next might redesign an operational workflow around intelligent automation, or ship an agentic feature that materially changes how customers use a venture’s product. You’ll adapt quickly to different products, codebases, technology stacks and commercial contexts.

This is product engineering with unusual scope. You’ll help identify which problems matter, own the journey from discovery to production, and stay accountable for measuring and improving real-world outcomes.

Reporting to the Chief Venturing Officer, you’ll work with venture and x15 leaders to identify where strong product engineering and emerging AI capabilities can create the most value.

What you'll do

Own the outcome, end to end. Take ambiguous customer and venture problems through discovery, prototyping, production, measurement and iteration.

Take on focused missions across the portfolio. Move between ventures at different stages of maturity, adapting to each context while delivering in close collaboration with the venture – some will advance a venture’s critical path; others will explore what could shape its future.

Extend x15’s AI-native engineering capability. Use coding agents and AI-enabled workflows to improve development speed, testing, iteration and software quality; turn what works into repeatable practices that strengthen the portfolio and can inform how x15 and CommBank engineers build with AI.

Build AI products that hold up in the real world. Design, evaluate and operate systems using the right mix of models, agents, tools and deterministic software. Make explicit trade-offs across accuracy, latency, cost, reliability, security and control.

Make modern AI work in a high-trust environment. Design for sensitive data, existing platforms and complex integrations, with security, privacy, testing, observability and appropriate controls built in from the outset.

Turn experimentation into evidence. Work with product, design, venture leaders and customers to test assumptions, evaluate outcomes and decide what warrants further investment.

Build shared product and platform foundations where they create real leverage. Develop reusable AI services, integration patterns and architecture that help multiple ventures move faster or operate more safely, without forcing reuse where venture needs differ.

Have repeatedly shipped significant software products and can explain your personal technical, product and delivery contribution.

Can work hands-on across the full stack and become effective quickly in unfamiliar products, codebases and technology stacks.

Show strong product judgement. You find the underlying problem, challenge assumptions and make sensible trade-offs between customer value, commercial value, complexity and speed.

Use AI-assisted development as a core part of your engineering practice, and understand how to build and evaluate AI-powered systems without being tied to a particular framework.

Know the difference between a clever prototype and a dependable product. You use AI where it creates measurable value and choose a simpler or deterministic approach when it is better.

Navigate security, privacy, risk, legal, platform and organisational constraints pragmatically, working with specialists to resolve issues and keep delivery moving.

Hold strong technical opinions loosely. You explain trade-offs, challenge approaches constructively and change your mind when the evidence warrants it.

Adapt across ventures, domains and technical environments while carrying useful lessons and capabilities into the next mission.

We’ll hire at the level that matches demonstrated experience, scope and impact. Senior engineers independently own complex product builds end to end. Staff engineers lead technically ambiguous initiatives and create leverage across teams and ventures. Principal engineers shape portfolio-level technical direction and tackle difficult cross-venture engineering problems. Every level stays hands-on and close to the code.
