Come join our Rocket Ship and be part of Compass Datacenter’s mission to make life better by providing the world’s technology leaders with a secure place to plug-in wherever they grow. We provide custom, move-in ready data centers, from edge deployments to core facilities serving hyperscale, cloud and enterprise customers. At Compass we have our sights set on leaving a legacy imprint on the data center industry. By putting Culture first, we can show this not only produces results, but more importantly, can change lives.

Compass is recruiting for a Senior Accountant, Data Center Operations to own the accounting for an assigned portfolio of data center buildings and leases. This role partners closely with site leaders, customers, vendors, FP&A, Lease Administration, Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable, and other accounting teams to ensure operations are accurately recorded, billed, recovered, and reported. The ideal candidate combines strong property accounting expertise with an ownership mindset and an interest in using technology, AI, and automation to build scalable processes in a growing organization.

Responsibilities

  • Own operational accounting for an assigned portfolio of data center buildings and leases, ensuring complete, accurate, and timely recognition, recoveries, and reporting.
  • Lead annual CAM reconciliations and translate lease terms, including escalators, caps, floors, exclusions, gross-ups, and utility pass-throughs, into accurate billing, recoveries, and revenue recognition.
  • Calculate monthly power and utility billings and resolve billing, recovery, and reporting questions for customers and site operations leaders.
  • Lead the property month-end close by reviewing automated journal entries and reconciliations, preparing judgment-based entries, and completing balance sheet reconciliations.
  • Review vendor invoices against signed contracts and pricing before payment, and resolve billing errors or disputes directly with vendors.
  • Support annual operating expense and recovery budgets and forecasts in partnership with Operations and FP&A.
  • Prepare month-over-month and budget-to-actual variance analysis with clear narratives explaining the operational drivers behind the results.
  • Produce building-level and portfolio reporting covering recovery realization, variances, and exception trends, and communicate insights to key stakeholders and executive leadership.
  • Maintain audit-ready schedules and documentation, support internal and external audits, strengthen controls, and document standard operating procedures and close checklists.
  • Champion NetSuite, reporting, AI, and automation improvements that increase accuracy, timeliness, and scalability across billing, recoveries, and close workflows.
  • Coach accountants and analysts and help establish consistent standards for lease interpretation, reconciliations, analysis, and stakeholder communication.

Skills and Experience

  • Strong lease interpretation skills and the ability to apply lease terms to billing, recoveries, and revenue recognition.
  • Knowledge of CAM reconciliations, property recoveries, variance analysis, general accounting, and month-end close procedures.
  • Proficiency with ERP and accounting systems such as NetSuite, along with advanced Excel skills; dashboard experience is beneficial.
  • Solid understanding of GAAP and property accounting principles, with an audit and controls mindset and strong documentation discipline.
  • Ability to read vendor contracts and compare billed charges with signed terms and pricing.
  • Comfort using AI tools for analysis, reconciliation support, research, and documentation, with sound judgment when reviewing outputs.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to translate financial data into actionable operational insights.
  • Clear, proactive communication and a customer-service mindset when working with vendors, NNN customers, site leaders, and cross-functional partners.
  • High attention to detail, strong ownership, and the ability to manage competing priorities and tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Team-first approach with the ability to coach others and adapt to new technology and evolving ways of working.

Requirements

  • Two to three or more years of audit experience with a regional or national firm, or four to five or more years of progressive accounting experience in industry.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required. A master’s degree or CPA designation, including CPA Canada or U.S. CPA, is preferred.
  • Experience leading CAM reconciliations and tenant recoveries is preferred but not required.
  • Experience using AI to automate or improve accounting processes is preferred but not required.
  • Fluent spoken and written English required. Additional languages are beneficial.
