Crane NXT Technology/Software

Embedded Software Manager

Malvern, Canada +1 In person Full-time

Have you ever used a self-checkout, played the slots at a casino, grabbed a drink from a vending machine, or paid to park your car? If so, you may have done so with the aid of technology from Crane Payment Innovations (CPI). We make technology that powers everyday transactions, helping keep the world of payments moving through payment validation devices and business management software. WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING As Manager, Embedded Software Development, you will lead embedded software engineering teams responsible for the software and firmware at the heart of CPI's intelligent products.

You will combine people leadership and delivery accountability with a strong technical understanding of embedded systems. The role requires the ability to work effectively across software, electronics, mechanical systems, test and product engineering, where software behavior is closely coupled to physical hardware and real-time product operation. Initially, you will lead a distributed embedded software team supporting the SC3 product platform, with engineers located in Malvern, Pennsylvania and Buxtehude, Germany.

The scope of the role may expand as CPI evolves its embedded software organization. The Manager, Embedded Software Development will have a direct impact on the Engineering organization, responsible for: Leading a geographically distributed team of embedded software engineers in the United States and Germany. Translating product and system requirements into executable embedded software development plans and delivery commitments.

Providing technical leadership and direction for embedded software architecture, design, implementation, integration and verification. Ensuring effective collaboration between embedded software, electronic hardware, systems engineering, test and validation, manufacturing and product management. Managing development across new products, product enhancements, customer requirements and sustaining engineering. Establishing and maintaining appropriate engineering practices for embedded software quality, configuration management, code review, testing and release.

Ensuring software designs appropriately address real-time behavior, hardware constraints, reliability, maintainability and product lifecycle requirements. Developing engineers through coaching, technical mentoring, career development and clear performance expectations. Supporting recruitment, workforce planning and development of the embedded software engineering capability. Managing engineering priorities, resource constraints, technical risks and cross-functional dependencies.

Driving continuous improvement in embedded development tools, automation, build and test infrastructure, and engineering processes. Representing Embedded Software Development in engineering reviews, product planning and cross-functional decision-making. WHO WE'RE LOOKING FOR You will bring substantial experience developing embedded software for commercial products together with demonstrated engineering leadership experience.

This is fundamentally an embedded engineering leadership role. A strong understanding of electronic hardware, microprocessors, real-time systems and hardware/software interaction is essential. You do not need to be the team's primary developer, but you must have sufficient technical depth to challenge designs, understand failures and risks, and provide meaningful technical direction. Qualifications and Requirements Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering , Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent relevant experience.

Typically 8 or more years of professional embedded software or firmware development experience, including technical or people leadership responsibility. Strong professional experience developing software for embedded products. Strong knowledge of C and/or C++ in resource-constrained embedded environments. Experience with microcontrollers, microprocessors and embedded hardware architectures. Practical understanding of real-time systems, including interrupt-driven designs, concurrency, timing constraints and RTOS-based software.

Strong understanding of hardware/software interfaces, including device drivers and common embedded communication interfaces and protocols. Ability to read electronic schematics and work effectively with electronic hardware engineers. Experience troubleshooting complex hardware/software interactions using appropriate embedded debugging and laboratory tools. Understanding of embedded software architecture, modular design, source control, configuration management, automated builds, code review and software testing.

Experience delivering embedded software through the complete commercial product lifecycle. Demonstrated ability to lead, coach and develop software engineers. Experience working with geographically distributed engineering teams. Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders. Preferred Experience Experience developing embedded software for complex electromechanical products.

Experience with RTOS-based systems and embedded Linux. Experience with ARM or other modern microcontroller/microprocessor architectures. Experience with embedded communications such as CAN, USB, Ethernet, UART, SPI or I²C. Experience with hardware debugging tools such as JTAG/SWD debuggers, oscilloscopes and logic analyzers. Experience working with bootloaders, firmware update mechanisms and embedded product diagnostics.

Experience with embedded cybersecurity and secure software development practices. Experience developing products with long operational lifecycles and significant field-installed populations. Experience with payments, currency handling, vending, retail, gaming, industrial automation or other intelligent electromechanical products. Experience leading technology modernization or migration of mature embedded product platforms.

PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES Technically Grounded: You understand both software and the hardware it controls and can engage engineers credibly on architecture, design trade-offs and difficult technical problems. People Developer: You create clear expectations, coach engineers effectively and build technical depth within the organization. Systems Thinker: You consider software, electronics, mechanics, sensors, communications and product behavior as parts of a complete engineered system.

Action Oriented: You make practical decisions, establish priorities and maintain delivery momentum while managing technical risk. Collaborative Leader: You build strong relationships across sites and across software, hardware, systems, test , manufacturing and product organizations. Quality Focused: You recognize that embedded software directly controls physical products and place appropriate emphasis on reliability, robustness and disciplined engineering.
