Position Summary

CVS Health is hiring a Lead Director for our Cloud Platform engineering teams within Digital Engineering - the AWS infrastructure, DevOps practices, and delivery pipelines that every product engineering team builds on. This Lead Director - Digital Engineering, Cloud Platform will own multiple platform engineering teams that power the products and services we deliver to our members, and every improvement you make - faster delivery, lower cost, smarter automation - compounds across everything we ship.

This is a strategic architecture and leadership role: you’ll set technical direction for AWS, DevOps, and CI/CD; own the platform’s security and compliance posture; run cloud cost as a managed portfolio; build the self-service tooling that lets developers move faster; and lead AI adoption across both the platform and the teams that depend on it. You will bring deep technical depth, financial acumen to run infrastructure like a business, and the leadership presence to make this platform a genuine competitive advantage. This role reports to an AVP within Digital Engineering and partners directly with executive engineering leadership.

What You’ll Be Doing

Setting the cloud platform strategy, target-state AWS architecture, and multi-year roadmap in partnership with Product, Architecture, Security, and enterprise stakeholders

Owning AWS security architecture and governance - landing zone design, multi-account guardrails (SCPs, IAM boundaries, encryption), and partnership with Security and Compliance to meet regulatory requirements (e.g., HIPAA, HITRUST) and close audit findings - including the data/messaging backbone (MSK, PostgreSQL, OpenSearch) and serverless patterns that underpin product workloads

Leading AI adoption across the organization - AI-assisted engineering tools for developers and AI-driven platform operations like anomaly detection and automated remediation - with governance that balances velocity and compliance

Driving CI/CD standards and Infrastructure-as-Code adoption, and building self-service capabilities so product teams can provision environments and pipelines without waiting on tickets

Running cloud cost as a managed portfolio: cost visibility, showback/chargeback, and an annual optimization target delivered through rightsizing and architecture reviews

Owning operational excellence - observability, SLOs, incident management, and capacity planning - across the platform

Leading multiple engineering teams and managers: organizational design, hiring, coaching, and performance management, while building the leadership pipeline within your organization

Representing the platform to senior stakeholders, communicating health, cost, and tradeoffs, and evaluating emerging technology for strategic fit

Required Qualifications

  • 10+ years of experience in infrastructure or platform engineering
  • 7+ years of experience leading engineering teams, managers, and technical portfolios
  • 5+ years of hands-on AWS at enterprise scale experience - compute, networking, IAM, and managed data/messaging services such as MSK (Kafka), PostgreSQL (RDS/Aurora), and OpenSearch; serverless experience (Lambda, Fargate, Step Functions)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Leadership experience in healthcare, insurance, financial services, or another highly regulated industry
  • Demonstrated success scaling CI/CD platforms and Infrastructure-as-Code (Terraform, CloudFormation, or CDK) across multiple teams
  • Proven track record running a cloud cost optimization or FinOps program with measurable savings
  • Experience embedding security-by-design into cloud architecture, including IAM governance, encryption standards, and compliance with regulatory frameworks relevant to healthcare or other regulated industries
  • Executive-level communication skills, with the ability to translate technical strategy, cost, and risk for both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Experience building internal developer platforms (IDPs) or self-service tooling
  • Direct experience piloting or scaling AI-assisted engineering tools (e.g., Claude Code, GitHub Copilot) in an enterprise organization
  • AWS Certified DevOps Engineer, AWS Certified Solutions Architect, or AWS Certified Security – Specialty
  • FinOps Foundation certification or demonstrated FinOps practice leadership
  • Experience influencing senior leaders across business, product, architecture, security, and data in a matrixed enterprise
