About the Role
DXC Technology is looking for a Backup / Storage Engineer to join our infrastructure services team, helping to keep our customers' backup and storage environments reliable, secure, and available.
In this role, you'll play an important part in protecting critical business data, monitoring backup operations, and making sure issues are identified and resolved quickly. You'll take a proactive approach to maintaining the backup infrastructure, investigating problems, and helping to prevent them from happening again.
We're looking for someone who takes pride in their work, enjoys solving technical problems and understands the importance of delivering a dependable service. You'll be comfortable working independently when needed, while also collaborating with colleagues, other technical teams, and managers to keep things running smoothly. DXC Technology is committed to providing equal employment opportunities and building an inclusive working environment.
We welcome applications from people with different backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives, and are committed to fair and inclusive recruitment practices. Reasonable adjustments and appropriate support may be considered in line with DXC's accommodation policies to help qualified candidates participate in the recruitment process and perform their role effectively.
You'll also have the opportunity to build on your existing technical knowledge, explore new technologies and contribute ideas that help improve the way our services are delivered.
This is an on-site, shift-based position, with Edinburgh the preferred location, although candidates based in Luton will also be considered.
Due to the nature of the client environment, eligibility for security clearance is required for this role. To meet the current security requirements, candidates must be sole UK nationals and have lived and worked continuously in the UK for the past ten years. Unfortunately, we are unable to consider dual nationals for this position.
What You'll Be Doing
- Monitor and validate daily backup operations across more than 200 servers running on a variety of platforms, ensuring backups complete successfully and issues are identified promptly.
- Investigate and resolve backup failures, working through technical issues to restore normal service as quickly as possible.
- Produce and review daily backup reports, following up on failures and taking the appropriate action.
- Support IT service management activities, including incident, problem, and change management, in line with established ITIL processes.
- Work closely with colleagues and other technical teams to investigate incidents, share knowledge, and resolve issues effectively.
- Carry out root cause analysis where appropriate, identifying underlying problems and recommending or implementing longer-term solutions.
- Raise and manage hardware support calls with vendors when infrastructure faults occur, helping to ensure issues are resolved in a timely manner.
- Proactively maintain and manage the backup infrastructure to support service availability, reliability, and performance.
- Contribute to the development and improvement of backup strategies, ensuring they meet business and service requirements.
- Create, update, and maintain backup and recovery procedures so that processes are clearly documented and can be followed consistently.
- Manage and monitor storage and backup hardware platforms, helping to maintain their health, capacity, and performance.
- Identify opportunities to improve operational processes and make better use of available technologies, including automation where appropriate.
What You'll Bring
Knowledge of backup and recovery technologies, with an understanding of the importance of data protection and service continuity.
Experience with Veritas NetBackup, ideally including the versions relevant to the customer's environment (up to version 11).
Knowledge of enterprise storage technologies, particularly NetApp and Dell EMC.
A basic understanding of operating systems such as Microsoft Windows, Red Hat Linux, Solaris, and VMS would be beneficial, although this is not essential.
The ability to learn new technologies and adapt to different tools and frameworks, including those that support automation and more efficient service delivery.
A practical, problem-solving approach, with the confidence to investigate issues and find effective workarounds when technical limitations arise.
Strong communication skills and the ability to work well with colleagues, customers, and other technical teams.
A proactive attitude, a strong sense of ownership and a commitment to seeing issues through to resolution.
A flexible and pragmatic approach to working, with the ability to manage priorities in a shift-based operational environment.

Recruitment fraud is a scheme in which fictitious job opportunities are offered to job seekers typically through online services, such as false websites, or through unsolicited emails claiming to be from the company. These emails may request recipients to provide personal information or to make payments as part of their illegitimate recruiting process. DXC does not make offers of employment via social media networks and DXC never asks for any money or payments from applicants at any point in the recruitment process, nor ask a job seeker to purchase IT or other equipment on our behalf.
