Eaton’s Corporate Sector division is currently seeking a Director, Global Software Engineering Strategy and Architecture.
The opportunity
Software is central to how Eaton creates differentiated value across its products, platforms and businesses. We are seeking a senior software architecture and strategy leader to translate business and technology strategy into clear technical direction across Global Software Engineering.
Reporting to the Senior Vice President, Global Software Engineering, the Director will work with product, platform, architecture, engineering and business leaders to determine where Eaton should differentiate, invest, accelerate, converge, reuse, partner, acquire or stop.
This is a senior technical leadership role with enterprise-wide reach. The Director will shape architecture and platform strategy, guide major technology choices and align near-term decisions with the longer-term direction of Eaton’s software business.
The role will operate through influence, technical credibility and architectural direction. It is not a central product organisation, portfolio-reporting function or governance role detached from implementation.
What you’ll do
Translate strategy into technical direction
Bring customer, commercial, product, platform, technology and investment perspectives together into a coherent Global Software Engineering strategy.
Translate that strategy into architecture principles, platform direction, technology choices and product, platform and engineering roadmaps that guide decisions across the organisation.
Shape portfolio and technology choices
Maintain an integrated view across embedded software, edge, cloud, applications, platforms, data, AI and strategic technology initiatives.
Develop decision-ready recommendations on where Eaton should invest, accelerate, converge, reuse, partner, acquire, contain or stop. Evaluate choices based on customer value, commercial potential, technical differentiation, investment, dependencies and risk.
Assess how external technology trends, open-source technologies, partnerships and broader ecosystems could strengthen Eaton’s competitive position.
Drive architectural coherence and reuse
Work with architecture, platform and engineering leaders to establish coherent technical direction across the software portfolio.
Identify fragmented architectures, duplicated investment and capability gaps. Define where shared platforms, common capabilities, reusable components and consistent architecture can create measurable value without introducing unnecessary centralisation.
Shape integrated architectures connecting physical products, product-generated data, embedded software, connectivity, cloud services and AI-enabled capabilities.
Shape platform and AI strategy
Define how platforms can support differentiated products, accelerate engineering and enable reuse across Eaton’s businesses.
Help determine where Eaton should build proprietary capability and where it should use open-source technology, external platforms, partnerships or ecosystem capabilities.
Guide the application of AI across products, software platforms and engineering, ensuring that investment is aligned with customer value, technical feasibility and the longer-term software strategy.
Keep architecture connected to implementation
Ensure that technical direction is reflected in product, platform and technology roadmaps and can become credible delivery commitments.
Lead a strategy and architecture capability in which senior architects remain close to working software, prototypes, repositories and important implementation decisions. Architecture must provide practical technical direction, not governance separated from delivery.
Success will be reflected in clearer technology choices, more coherent roadmaps, stronger platforms, greater reuse, reduced fragmentation and strategic decisions that translate into working software and customer outcomes.
What you'll bring
- Significant leadership experience in software architecture and technology strategy.
- Experience translating strategy into technical direction and product, platform and architecture roadmaps across multiple products or businesses.
- Broad architecture experience across embedded software, edge, cloud, applications, platforms, data, AI and APIs.
- Experience creating integrated solutions that connect hardware products, product-generated data, embedded software and connected or cloud-based software.
- Evidence of simplifying fragmented software architectures or portfolios and making choices about differentiation, convergence, reuse, shared platforms, partnerships and lower-value activity.
- Success influencing senior product, engineering and business leaders to align architecture, portfolio and investment choices without direct authority.
- Experience leading senior architects or distributed international architecture teams, with accountability for technical and implementation outcomes.
Preferred
- Experience in power management, electrification, industrial technology or another complex engineered-product environment.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant technical discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
- Significant senior-level experience in software architecture, technology strategy, software engineering or product platforms.
- Experience working across multiple businesses, product groups or technology domains.
Skills
Eaton’s Culture Model calls on leaders to Win Together, Think Big and Act Boldly. In this role, that means:
Win Together - Build trust and alignment across value-stream, product, platform, architecture, engineering and business leadership. Bring individual product, platform and engineering plans into a coherent direction, respecting existing leadership accountabilities while challenging local optimisation. Create constructive tension where product ambition, architecture, investment and delivery capacity do not align.
Think Big - Connect customer needs, business strategy and technical possibility across the full software landscape. Identify where differentiated architecture, emerging technology, shared capabilities and platform leverage can create meaningful customer and enterprise value. Distinguish opportunities for enterprise leverage from unnecessary centralisation, balancing long-term architecture direction with near-term customer and business needs.
Act Boldly - Make explicit choices rather than producing broad strategic themes or theoretical target-state diagrams. Challenge incremental thinking, weak differentiation, architectural fragmentation and unsupported investment logic. Surface difficult trade-offs and provide decision-ready options that enable senior leaders to make clear product, platform, technology and investment choices.
Across all three, you will lead through influence, evidence and technical credibility, remaining close enough to implementation to ensure the strategy is executable.
All positions may require participation in video and in-person interviews as part of the hiring process. All candidates will be evaluated based on job-related competencies, and all candidates’ privacy rights and data security will be protected in accordance with applicable laws.
