Intern: High School Research Fellow (100% Remote)
Location: 100% Remote
Position Summary
We are looking for an exceptionally talented, self-motivated High School Research Fellow to join our team for a one-year virtual fellowship at the intersection of health service research, data science, and clinical informatics. This role is built for a rare, highly driven student who already possesses advanced technical skills, loves diving into complex healthcare data, and is eager to support leading academic research and high-impact publications over an extended timeline.
You will bridge the gap between applied analytics and academic discovery, supporting senior researchers by preparing data and assisting with the research pipeline. Because this is a 12-month remote position, you must possess excellent independent time-management skills to balance this role alongside your high school coursework. While you do not have an undergraduate degree yet, you must possess advanced, self-taught, or mentored technical capabilities (like strong Python and SQL knowledge). This long-term fellowship offers an unparalleled opportunity to gain elite research exposure and engineering experience before entering college.
Key Roles & Responsibilities
Analytics Support & Assistance: While you will not be designing or running advanced models independently, you will closely assist the data scientists who do. You will help prepare datasets for modeling, verify data formats, and run pre-written scripts under supervision.
Clinical Data Insight & Pipeline Management: Get hands-on experience with large-scale, real-world data. You will contribute to the process of extracting, cleaning, and refining data from Electronic Health Records (EHR) and billing systems, ensuring senior analysts have a reliable, clean foundation for their work.
Literature & Standards: You will conduct targeted and systematic literature reviews to support the team, ensuring our projects address the most current gaps in evidence and health IT practice.
Required Qualifications & Expertise
The Toolbox:Advanced proficiency in Python and SQL is strictly required. You should be highly comfortable using data manipulation libraries like Pandas and NumPy to clean and structure data. Experience with R or Java is a bonus.
Proven Track Record: While formal research experience is not required, you must demonstrate a track record of advanced independent technical work. This includes high-level science fair projects (e.g., ISEF competitors), advanced AP/IB computer science coursework, substantial open-source contributions, or personal data engineering projects.
EST Work Hours preferred
Remote Work Readiness: Strong self-discipline, a reliable internet connection, and the ability to work independently across time zones.
Domain Interest: A strong curiosity about the healthcare landscape, how clinical data is structured, and a desire to learn how quantitative research methods are applied in real-world health research.
Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication. We need a critical thinker who can take technical instructions, execute them accurately, and communicate progress clearly over virtual channels (Slack, email, video).
Compensation
Hourly Rate - 13.75 GBP
