The Role
We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Control & Instrumentation Engineer. You will provide technical leadership and engineering assurance to support the safe, compliant, and reliable operation of refinery assets. Working across both operational and project environments, you will deliver expert control and instrumentation engineering solutions that optimise asset performance, drive continuous improvement, and enable the successful delivery of business growth objectives. You will play a key role in ensuring the integrity, availability, and future development of critical control systems while maintaining the highest standards of safety and regulatory compliance.
Primary Accountabilities
- Respond to emergent site issues by providing engineering assurance to support continued safe operation, leading assessments and investigations, and implementing necessary changes to plant design, equipment or operating practices.
- Provide Control & Instrumentation (C&I) expertise and input to process safety studies, including HAZOP, LOPA and SIL determination assessments.
- Act as the C&I technical authority within Management of Change (MoC) processes, ensuring all modifications are technically robust, compliant and appropriately governed.
- Design, review and assure safety-related systems in accordance with IEC 61511 and IEC 61508 standards.
- Identify, assess and mitigate threats to asset reliability through the development and implementation of maintenance, inspection and obsolescence management strategies.
- Own and maintain key business processes to ensure compliance with regulatory, engineering and company requirements.
- Support turnaround events by developing scopes of work, preparing budget estimates, providing engineering assurance and leading maintenance or project execution activities.
- Lead the delivery of C&I projects that enhance safety, environmental performance, operational reliability and business performance.
- Provide C&I engineering design and assurance throughout the full project lifecycle, from concept and front-end development through design, execution, commissioning and handover.
- Develop technical specifications, equipment requisitions and user requirement specifications, incorporating functional safety and ATEX requirements where applicable.
- Evaluate and assess vendor proposals, ensuring alignment with technical, operational and commercial requirements.
- Manage budgets associated with assigned plant modifications and engineering projects.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives across the business.
- Act as a technical expert in automation and C&I engineering, providing guidance, mentoring, training and technical support to colleagues.
- Develop and evaluate business cases and funding proposals for C&I-related projects and improvement initiatives.
- Participate in the C&I duty rota and provide out-of-hours technical support as required.
- Support refinery turnaround events, which may require additional working hours, including weekends.
- Participate in site duty arrangements, including the Site Duty Manager rota where applicable.
- Hold a full UK driving licence and be willing to travel as required by the role.
- Champion a strong safety culture, promoting safe design, operation and decision-making at all times.
- Provide technical leadership and discipline expertise, ensuring compliance with internal procedures and relevant national and international standards.
- Lead, coordinate and support the activities of engineers, designers, technicians and contractors.
- Drive project execution, make timely engineering decisions and ensure activities are delivered in line with agreed objectives, budgets and schedules.
About You
The successful candidate will be degree qualified in an appropriate engineering discipline and either hold Chartered Engineer status or be working towards professional registration. Formal training or qualifications in functional safety and ATEX would be advantageous, alongside experience acting as an authorised engineer within Management of Change (MoC) processes.
You will bring significant experience in electrical, automation, control and instrumentation engineering gained within the oil and gas sector or a similar high-hazard, top-tier COMAH environment. A strong background in supporting operating plant activities, delivering C&I elements of projects, and working effectively within multidisciplinary teams is essential. Experience in managing the reliability and performance of C&I assets, together with extensive knowledge of field instrumentation, control systems and safety PLCs, is also required.
The role demands a flexible and adaptable individual who can respond to changing business priorities while maintaining an enterprise-wide perspective. You will be a confident communicator, capable of building effective working relationships with stakeholders across all levels of the organisation, as well as external suppliers and industry bodies. A sound understanding of project delivery processes, including development, planning, budgeting and risk management, is important, alongside good commercial awareness and knowledge of procurement and contracting strategies.
As a technical specialist in control and instrumentation engineering, you will possess strong expertise in functional safety, ATEX compliance, instrumentation, actuated valves, control systems and safety PLCs. You will also have a good working knowledge of relevant engineering standards, including API, British and European standards, with the ability to interpret and apply requirements appropriately. Experience in environmental emissions monitoring, fiscal metering and wireless technologies would be considered advantageous.
