Organization/ Role Overview

The Lilly Change the Course Commitment is a global health initiative focused on diabetes and obesity in resource-limited settings, including low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). One of its focus areas is helping strengthen primary health systems, working with global health organizations to train community health workers, use digital tools, and improve disease awareness, prevention, diagnosis, and care.

As part of the Social Impact Global Health Initiatives team, the Associate Director helps lead health system strengthening, by collaborating with global health organizations and other collaborators to strengthen health systems' capacity to prevent, diagnose, and manage noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), with a focus on diabetes and obesity in resource-limited settings, including LMICs. The role focuses on primary healthcare capacity (including training community health workers), policy and governance, digital and data infrastructure, and outcomes measurement.

The individual manages relationships with global health organizations, NGOs, and other collaborators, and helps ensure all initiatives contribute to meaningful impact and outcomes, while also providing strategic guidance and support to other Lilly teams, as needed.

Key Responsibilities

Primary healthcare capacity: Support global programs that help train and equip frontline health workers, including community health workers, to prevent, screen, diagnose, and manage NCDs with a focus on cardiometabolic conditions like diabetes and obesity in resource-limited settings, using community health workers and other frontline delivery models to drive measurable increases in capacity and reach; check in regularly on progress against agreed goals and key indicators.

Policy, governance, and communications: Support International Corporate Affairs and Global Public Policy, who lead policy engagement with governments, and regional leaders and teams to help mobilize the policies and governance needed for sustainable NCD care, with a focus on cardiometabolic conditions; coordinate internal and external communications on health system strengthening projects with Communications, through standard review.

Digital and data infrastructure: Ensure digital health tools and data systems that support better care and measurement are included, working with legal and privacy teams as needed.

Outcomes, impact, and continuity of care: Track program and health-system measures, such as health workers trained, facilities and referral pathways supported, people screened and linked to care, and continuity of care across the care pathway, using aggregated, partner-reported data; metrics are product-neutral (not tied to the use of any Lilly medicine).

Measurement, evaluation, and progress monitoring: Evaluate whether each project is directly driving impact through a robust measurement and evaluation framework; monitor progress against key milestones and performance indicators, escalating and course-correcting where projects are off-track.

Manage contracts for health system strengthening projects.

Engage Legal, Ethics & Compliance, Privacy, and Tax early on each project, initiate required reviews (including anti-corruption due diligence on new partners) and carry the resulting requirements into contracts and project execution, such as conflict-of-interest safeguards, guardrails for interactions with government officials, use-of-funds controls, keeping activities non-promotional, and data privacy requirements.

Look for new collaborations with multilateral/ global health organizations, NGOs, and other organizations, and new opportunities that fit the commitment priorities.

Represent the work in external meetings and conversations, including key global health forums, as needed, and contribute health system strengthening program data to Lilly’s annual Sustainability Report, using approved materials and messaging and established review processes.

Provide strategic health system strengthening guidance, best practices and support to other Lilly teams, as needed.
