EN03 - Engineer E3

Northampton, United Kingdom Hybrid Full-time

We are looking for a Data Engineer to deliver well-defined data products to a good standard, build technical and business knowledge, collaborate effectively, and progressively take greater ownership.

With data driving the way the Society makes day-to-day decisions, Data and Analytics are at the forefront of the data strategy. We are looking for experienced cross-functional collaborators to thrive in Agile ways of working to ensure we are continuously improving our platforms - with data as the number one asset.

At Nationwide we offer hybrid working wherever possible. More rewarding relationships are supported through our hybrid approach, bringing colleagues together across our UK wide estate, whilst also supporting generous access to home working. We value our time in the office to solve problems, to learn, and to feel connected.

For this job, you'll spend at least two days per week, or if part-time, you'll spend 40% of your working time, based at our Northampton, Swindon or London office. If your application is successful, your hiring manager will provide further details on how this works.

You can also find out more about our approach to hybrid working here.

Nationwide is committed to the redeployment of our employees impacted by change, as such applications for redeployment candidates will be prioritised in this recruitment process.

If you’re a colleague on long-term absence (for example, on parental leave) or a temporary worker, please use your personal email address to submit an application.

What you’ll be doing

You’ll play a key role in developing and maintaining data pipelines that ingest, transform and deliver data across the organisation. Working with a range of engineering tools and platforms, including SQL, Python, Databricks and cloud technologies, you’ll build and support data tables, models and data products that meet defined business and technical requirements.

As part of the team, you’ll write clean, reliable and maintainable code that follows agreed engineering standards, while ensuring data outputs are accurate, complete and fit for purpose through robust validation and quality checks. You’ll investigate and resolve data issues and pipeline failures, escalating more complex challenges where appropriate, and contribute to the ongoing stability and performance of our data solutions.

You’ll follow established development, testing, deployment and change-control processes, creating and maintaining technical documentation to support the solutions you build. A strong understanding of data security, access controls and governance requirements will help ensure our data is managed responsibly and effectively.

Collaboration will be central to your role as you work closely with engineers, analysts, product teams and business stakeholders to deliver high-quality outcomes. You’ll participate in code reviews, testing activities and team delivery initiatives, taking ownership of well-defined engineering tasks and delivering them to agreed standards and timescales.

Alongside building technical expertise, you’ll develop a strong understanding of the business domain and underlying data, enabling you to contribute beyond purely technical delivery. You’ll continuously build your capability through learning, feedback and hands-on experience, while identifying opportunities to automate processes, simplify solutions and drive continuous improvement.

As your experience grows, you’ll demonstrate increasing independence in your work, seeking guidance where appropriate on more complex engineering decisions. You’ll also stay connected to developments in AI and analytics, helping to identify and translate relevant innovations into practical opportunities that create value for Nationwide.
