Advanced Associate, Cloud Service Engineer
- Location: Chennai, India (Hybrid)
- Team: Atlassian Administration & Engineering
- Experience: 2+ years in Atlassian administration or a related platform engineering role
About the Role
We’re looking for an Atlassian engineer with a few years of experience to join our Atlassian Administration & Engineering team. You’ll work with a team of seven engineers who support a global Atlassian Cloud platform used by about 10,000–12,000 people around the world, across Jira, Confluence, Jira Product Discovery (JPD), and Jira Service Management (JSM).
We recently finished a large migration to Atlassian Cloud, and we’re still bringing separate product instances together into one environment. The migration moved fast and left technical debt behind, so we’re now focused on cleanup: removing legacy customizations and making the platform match Atlassian Cloud best practices. You’ll own parts of that work yourself. That means spotting problems, proposing fixes, and building automation that keeps the platform clean and scalable.
What You’ll Do
- Platform administration: Take ownership of administration across Jira, Confluence, JPD, and JSM, including permissions, schemes, workflows, custom fields, and space and project configuration.
- User lifecycle automation: Design and maintain automated onboarding and offboarding, group management, and license management, working with identity providers and SCIM provisioning.
- Space and project lifecycle: Build repeatable, automated processes to create, standardize, and archive projects and spaces at scale.
- Reduce legacy customizations: Audit the environment for redundant custom fields, workflows, schemes, and app dependencies. Then propose and carry out plans to remove or consolidate them, using automation wherever possible.
- Automation engineering: Build and maintain Atlassian Automation rules for routine and bulk administrative work. Where built-in features fall short, design robust API-driven automation.
- Engineering practices: Treat platform automation as production code. Changes are peer-reviewed, tested, and released through a pipeline, not run ad hoc.
- AI-assisted engineering: Make AI part of your everyday workflow, from drafting scripts and analyzing configurations to writing documentation, so you deliver more without lowering the quality bar.
- Service metrics and observability: Capture service metrics through the Atlassian APIs, store them outside the platform, and build dashboards that show how the service is used and how it’s performing.
- Solution evaluation: Weigh built-in Atlassian features against custom or external solutions, and explain clearly why the chosen option is the best fit.
- Continuous improvement: Challenge processes that are overly complex, costly, or full of manual toil, and propose simpler, automated alternatives.
- Best practices and governance: Help define standards, naming conventions, and configuration guidelines for each product, and document them.
- Instance consolidation: Contribute to ongoing migration and consolidation work, including planning, data validation, and post-migration cleanup.
- Escalations and mentoring: Resolve complex platform issues, and share knowledge with less experienced teammates and stakeholders.
What We’re Looking For
Required
- 2+ years of hands-on administration of Jira and/or Confluence, preferably in Atlassian Cloud
- Working experience with Atlassian Automation, including building and troubleshooting rules
- Scripting skills in Python, PowerShell, or a similar language, and experience building automation against REST APIs (including JSON, authentication, pagination, and rate limits)
- Hands-on experience with Git and version-controlled code or configuration, plus a working understanding of CI/CD practices: build, test, release, versioning, and branching strategies
- Daily, effective use of AI-assisted development tools such as GitHub Copilot, Cursor, or Claude, with the judgment to validate, refine, or reject what they produce
- A solid understanding of Jira configuration: schemes, workflows, screens, fields, and permissions
- Experience managing users and groups at scale in Atlassian Admin
- The ability to analyze an existing configuration, recommend simplifications, and explain the trade-offs clearly
- Clear written and verbal communication in English, and comfort working with stakeholders around the world
- A bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, IT, or a related field, or equivalent experience
Nice to have
- Atlassian certifications (ACP-120, ACP-620, or Cloud Organization Admin)
- Experience with AWS services (such as Timestream, Lambda, or S3) and with dashboards in Grafana or similar tools
- Experience administering JSM (request types, queues, SLAs, portals) or JPD
- Experience with identity integration such as Okta, Azure AD/Entra ID, SAML SSO, or SCIM
- Migration experience with JCMA/CCMA or instance merges
- Experience with ScriptRunner or other marketplace apps, and with assessing app usage
What You’ll Gain
- Ownership of meaningful parts of a large, enterprise-scale Atlassian Cloud platform
- Real influence over how a global platform is standardized and modernized
- A clear growth path to Specialist and Advanced Specialist roles on the Atlassian Platform Engineering team
- Support for Atlassian certifications and ongoing learning
