Chemelex Manufacturing

Sr. Manager, Leak Detection

Edmonton, Canada In person Full-time

Specialty Leak Detection is a growth area for Chemelex. This position leads an electronics-focused product development incubator for our leak detection business, with responsibility for hardware, firmware, test system design, and the engineering practices needed to move concepts into commercial products. Together with cross-functional partners, you will plan and delegate work, review technical output, and guide the team through rapid prototyping, validation, and commercialization.

Prior leak detection product knowledge is helpful; the primary need is strong electronics engineering leadership, systems thinking, and practical execution. IN THIS POSITION YOU WILL: Rapidly learn the leak detection business context and customer needs while applying deep electronics, embedded systems, and product development expertise to challenge established technologies and practices. Execute the vision, strategy, and roadmap for the Leak Detection Incubator aligned to Chemelex growth priorities, translating business goals into clear engineering plans, milestones, and team assignments.

Lead and develop the incubator team across hardware, firmware, test systems, photonics, and external consultants by planning work, delegating responsibilities, reviewing output, and coaching for accountability and technical excellence. Partner closely with commercial teams to shape product concepts, gain customer feedback, and accelerate commercialization. Drive system-level architecture and design decisions across electronics hardware, firmware, sensing interfaces, test systems, photonic sensing, and ecosystem connectivity.

Oversee rapid prototyping, design verification, validation testing, automated test development, and qualification plans in accordance with Chemelex and industry standards. In collaboration with Program Management, manage project execution, prioritization, resource allocation, risk management, and milestone tracking to ensure speed-to-market and revenue impact. Leverage expert feedback from electrical heat trace design and broader Chemelex engineering teams toward integrated solutions.

Drive electronics hardware and firmware scale-up, manufacturing readiness, production test strategy, and launch execution. Champion intellectual property development, ensuring documentation of insights, designs, technical observations, and IP disclosures (Chemelex retains ownership of any co-developed IP). Build external partnerships (universities, labs, suppliers, technology firms) to accelerate innovation where appropriate.

Establish a culture of disciplined experimentation, design reviews, test-driven decisions, and continuous learning within the incubator team. Collaborate with other R&D domain leaders to increase team effectiveness. YOU HAVE: Bachelor's Degree or better in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Physics, or similar (MS or PhD preferred). Proven (5 years or more) management or leadership experience, including planning work, delegating work, reviewing technical output, and developing engineers.

Extensive (10 years or more) hands-on electronics engineering design experience, including hardware architecture, firmware or embedded systems, and product validation. Strong desire to coach and mentor a technical team toward product development, innovation, and disciplined execution. Proven experience transitioning electronics or embedded products from concept and prototype through production deployment and ongoing support.

Knowledge of PLM, eCAD, firmware development, and test system tools (ENOVIA, Altium, or similar). Knowledge of electrical product development practices, non-hazardous area approvals for electrical equipment, manufacturing processes, design verification, and quality assurance methodologies. A passion for continuous learning to improve your technical and leadership skills. Ability to effectively communicate at the individual, team, leadership and executive leadership level.

Ability to adapt to technical and business challenges, make tradeoffs, and guide the team to practical solutions. Strong written and verbal communication skills with emphasis on collaboration, teaching others, and creating knowledge.
