Job Title: Senior Manager, Software Engineering
We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Engineering Manager to join our Defined Benefits (DB) Technology team in the Workplace Investing Technology Business Unit. In this role, you will be accountable for driving new client implementations, corporate action changes for existing clients, and ongoing maintenance of the Defined Benefits Calculation Engine—the core platform that computes participant pension benefits across a wide range of plan types, formulas, and regulatory requirements.
You will be accountable for driving engineering execution, elevating technical craftsmanship, and developing strong, high-performing engineering teams that deliver accurate, timely, and compliant pension outcomes for our clients and their participants.
We are looking for someone committed to developing both their own technical expertise and the expertise of those around them—bringing modern engineering thinking, innovation, and continuous improvement to the organization. This role is ideal for an engineering-focused leader who thrives on building world-class teams, strengthening engineering discipline, and delivering the complex, calculation-intensive platforms that serve as foundational capabilities for the Defined Benefits business.
The Purpose of Your Role
As an engineering manager, you will combine deep technical and DB domain expertise with a passion for mentoring, coaching, and growing engineering talent. You will partner closely with other engineering teams, solution architecture, product owners, and pension benefit consultants (actuarial and plan-provision experts) to shape technical direction, translate complex plan rules and benefit formulas into robust engineering solutions, implement client-specific configurations, and ensure the teams you lead are aligned on the engineering approaches, standards, and best practices that guide how work gets done.
You will be a steward of calculation accuracy, auditability, and regulatory compliance across the DB platform.
The Value You Deliver
Align engineering talent, skills, and team composition with DB platform strategy and priorities—enabling scalable, secure, and reliable pension calculation capabilities.
Own engineering execution of new client implementations and corporate actions—mergers, spin-offs, freezes, amendments—delivering accurate, well-tested, auditable calculation outcomes on schedule.
Mentor and empower engineers and managers to deepen expertise in Java, Spring Boot, distributed systems, cloud, and the DB calculation domain.
Drive an agile, learning-oriented organization that embraces continuous improvement while respecting the rigor, traceability, and controls of a regulated pension environment.
Champion engineering excellence—high standards for reliability, performance, resilience, security, calculation accuracy, and craftsmanship across all DB platform teams.
Build trusted relationships with architecture, SRE, product leaders, and pension benefit consultants to align on platform strategy, technical direction, and execution.
Lead adoption of modern engineering approaches—cloud-native architectures, DevOps, event-driven and distributed systems patterns, and AI/ML where applicable to DB calculations.
The Skills that are key to this role
Strong Java/Spring Boot engineering abilities and experience guiding teams in modern service architecture, ideally applied to calculation-intensive or rules-driven financial systems.
Knowledge of cloud infrastructure, Kubernetes orchestration, and containerization.
Strong operational engineering skills—observability, reliability engineering, incident response, and performance tuning—with sensitivity to the accuracy, auditability, and controls required for pension calculations.
Ability to lead complex client implementations and corporate action changes end to end—balancing delivery timelines, regulatory compliance, data quality, and calculation correctness.
Ability to translate complex plan provisions, benefit formulas, and actuarial/regulatory requirements (e.g., IRS/ERISA-driven rules) into accurate, testable calculation-engine logic and sound engineering controls.
Systems thinking and deep problem-solving across interconnected ecosystems—benefit calculation logic, plan rules, and downstream payment flows—backed by rigorous test strategies (regression suites, parallel/shadow runs, reconciliation before go-live).
Excellent communication and partnership skills with architecture, SRE, product teams, and pension benefit consultants, paired with a continuous learning mindset across cloud, AI, and platform modernization.
The Expertise We’re Looking For
Deep domain knowledge of Defined Benefits, specifically the Calculation Engine, DBCS, and Workbook components, including benefit formulas, eligibility/vesting rules, plan provisions, and pension payment options.
Hands-on understanding of new client implementation lifecycles and corporate actions—plan onboarding, amendments, mergers, acquisitions, spin-offs, freezes, and de-risking events—and how they translate into calculation-engine changes.
Deep engineering expertise building and scaling platform capabilities, shared services, and foundational enterprise technologies, with advanced proficiency in Java, Spring Boot, and modern integration frameworks.
Demonstrated leadership experience guiding software engineers and engineering managers, providing mentorship, technical coaching, and career development to build high-performing teams.
10+ years of hands-on software engineering experience with a strong command of agile delivery, iterative development practices, and robust CI/CD pipelines enabling reliable and automated deployments.
Extensive experience designing and operating cloud-native platforms, with strong knowledge of AWS or Azure services and container orchestration (e.g., Kubernetes), plus experience with AI-based coding productivity tools such as GitHub Copilot and LLM-enabled development workflows.
Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Software Engineering, or related technical field, demonstrating a solid foundation in data structures, algorithms, systems design, and core engineering principles.
