Senior Tax Analyst – Sales & Use Tax / SALT Forgent Power

Illinois In person Full-time

Job Type

Full-time

Description

Role Overview FPS is seeking a Senior Tax Analyst to own and build out its sales and use tax and broader state and local tax (SALT) function. Reporting directly to the Director of Tax, this role is the day-to-day lead for indirect tax compliance across a multi-entity manufacturing platform, with additional exposure to state income and franchise tax and to income tax reporting for a public company. The ideal candidate is technically strong in multi-state sales and use tax, eager to learn, and comfortable operating in a lean environment where initiative and ownership matter.

This is a role for someone who wants real ownership of a SALT function. You will help build out an efficient and effective process. You'll work directly alongside the Director of Tax on compliance, nexus, remediation, and audit matters as the business grows and expands into new jurisdictions.

Requirements

Responsibilities

Sales & Use Tax

  • Manage the end-to-end sales and use tax compliance cycle across all applicable jurisdictions, including preparation, filing, and reconciliation of returns across multiple entities
  • Maintain exemption and resale certificate documentation and manage ongoing outreach to customers and vendors
  • Research and document sales and use tax positions arising from manufacturing activities, equipment and materials purchases, and customer transactions, including manufacturing and other exemptions
  • Perform nexus analyses, including economic nexus, as the business expands, and support new state registrations
  • Support voluntary disclosure agreements and multi-state remediation efforts
  • Assist in responding to sales and use tax audits and notices from state and local taxing authorities
  • Monitor state and local tax law changes and assess their impact on the business

State Income & Franchise Tax

Support state income and franchise tax compliance, including apportionment, workpaper preparation, and coordination with external preparers

Assist with state notices, registrations, and annual report and entity-level filings

Income Tax & Provision Support

Support federal income tax compliance and coordination with external preparers

Assist with the state components of the quarterly and annual income tax provision under ASC 740, including state deferred taxes, rate reconciliation, and tax-related SEC disclosure support

Cross-Functional & General

  • Respond to internal tax inquiries from finance, legal, sales, and operations
  • Support tax due diligence and special projects as directed by the Director of Tax
  • Help build and maintain internal tax processes, compliance calendars, and workpaper standards as the tax function continues to develop
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required
  • CPA a plus
  • 4-6 years of tax experience with a focus on sales and use tax and/or state and local tax
  • Multi-state sales and use tax compliance experience required, including return preparation, exemption certificate management, and nexus analysis
  • Experience with audits, notices, and/or voluntary disclosure agreements a plus
  • Public accounting experience (regional firm or Big 4) and/or industry experience both welcomed
  • Proficiency with tax compliance software; hands-on experience with Avalara, or similar indirect tax platforms strongly preferred
  • Familiarity with state income and franchise tax concepts; working knowledge of ASC 740 a plus
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple deadlines independently
  • Comfortable operating in a lean, build-as-you-go environment. This role requires initiative, not just execution
