About the Team
We have outgrown traditional "Tools and Automation". Our new identity as the Applied AI and Engineering team reflects our bold vision: engineering a self-correcting, multi-agent ecosystem that pioneers the blueprint for the autonomous Google enterprise.
The Applied AI and Engineering team is responsible for architecting, deploying, and scaling agentic workflows, production-grade intelligence systems, and self-healing systems across Google Operations using modern internal and external technologies (including Gemini, Vertex AI, and advanced foundational models). This team goes beyond isolated automations to design coordinated, self-correcting multi-agent architectures that fundamentally transform how Google runs its global operations.
Role Overview
As a Program Management Manager (Technical) - Applied AI and Engineering, you will be the operational backbone driving the successful execution and delivery of our enterprise AI strategy. You will independently manage a portfolio of 2 to 3 concurrent, high-impact AI/engineering programs spanning diverse global stakeholders, product teams, and technical pods. In this role, you will lead the end-to-end technical development lifecycle—partnering directly with Applied AI and Software Engineers to build robust development plans, aggressively identify and unblock dependencies, flag risks, and ensure the flawless delivery of autonomous, multi-agent enterprise systems.
Position Responsibilities
Multi-Project AI Program Orchestration: Directly oversee, drive, and deliver a concurrent portfolio of 2 to 3 complex Applied AI and engineering workstreams from inception to operational maturity. Define critical paths, technical dependencies, compute/infrastructure resources, and sprint velocity to ensure reliable execution against the enterprise autonomous roadmap.
Rigorous Development Planning & Engineering Alignment: Partner closely with Tech Leads, Solution Leads, and engineering squads to translate architectural designs into granular, phased technical development plans. Coordinate daily/weekly execution cadences, monitor technical debt, and ensure engineering teams remain focused on core architectural deliverables.
Proactive Blocker Elimination & Risk Governance: Actively identify, document, and escalate technical roadblocks, data access constraints, API bottlenecks, and pending decisions. Maintain a no-surprises culture by establishing unambiguous risk logs and rapidly coordinating technical resolutions across internal and external teams.
Mission-Critical AI Launches & Operational Hypercare: Serve as the central program lead for high-stakes AI and multi-agent deployments. Establish strict launch-readiness criteria—including model safety, accuracy guardrails and fallback procedures—leading formal go/no-go checkpoints, fire drills, and post-launch stabilization tracks.
Executive Stakeholder Management & Strategic Trade-offs: Act as the strategic interface between technical pods and senior operational executives. Navigate conflicting stakeholder priorities across global departments, building consensus and facilitating trade-off decisions between feature complexity, model evaluation thresholds, latency, and delivery timelines.
Clear Communication & Transparent Telemetry: Translate deeply complex AI concepts—such as multi-agent orchestration, token budgets, and fine-tuning cycles—into executive-level dashboards and status reporting. Establish a single source of truth for portfolio health, engineering velocity, milestone progress, and pending blocker aging.
Cross-Functional & Platform Synchronization: Bridge silos across global operations, core Google engineering, cloud infrastructure teams, legal, and privacy. Ensure cross-functional dependencies and resource allocations are locked in and aligned with the enterprise autonomy blueprint.
Minimum Requirements
- Experience: 12+ years of experience in program or project management, ideally leading complex, cross-functional initiatives in a physical or operational setting.
- 3 years of people management experience with direct reports.
- Methodology Expertise: Strong proficiency with project management tools and methodologies. PMP, Scrum Master (CSM), or equivalent certification is a strong plus.
- Technical Experience: Basic knowledge of Java, HTML, and CSS, or equivalent Technical Program Management experience.
- Communication Skills: Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, communicating technical work to non-technical executive teams, with a proven ability to influence without authority and present to senior executives.
- Adaptability: Comfortable navigating ambiguity, managing competing priorities, and pivoting quickly in a fast-paced environment.
- Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Project Management, Computer Science, or a related field.
Preferred qualifications
Having as many of these specific qualifications is a plus, but transferable skills/experiences may be equally valuable:
Preferred Certifications: Certified ScrumMaster (CSM), Professional Scrum Master (PSM), or Project Management Professional (PMP) certifications are strong indicators of qualified candidates for this role.
