HSBC is one of the largest banking and financial services organisations in the world, with operations in 64 countries and territories. We aim to be where the growth is, enabling businesses to thrive and economies to prosper and, ultimately, helping people to fulfil their hopes and realise their ambitions.

We are currently seeking an experienced professional to join our team in the role of Assistant Director – Business Intelligence.

Purpose of the role

The Assistant Director – Business Intelligence will provide specialist expertise in data engineering and Power BI semantic model development, creating a trusted, scalable and governed data foundation for People Analytics products. The role will own the Power BI data and semantic model layer end to end, ensuring workforce data is accessible through intuitive, natural-language experiences and fit for business use.

In this role, you will

Own the Power BI data and semantic model layer end to end, designing scalable dimensional models, including star schemas, fact and dimension tables, relationships, hierarchies, calculated measures and reusable business logic.

Design and deliver robust data pipelines, including source onboarding, ingestion, transformation, dependency management, validation, monitoring and production support, in line with required security and governance controls.

Translate business and reporting requirements into reusable semantic models, common data definitions, KPI logic and calculation standards, establishing a consistent single source of truth across Power BI products.

Build and optimise Power BI datasets and semantic models using Import, DirectQuery and composite modelling approaches, applying advanced DAX and SQL to improve performance, usability, scalability and reliability.

Implement and support Row-Level Security, Column-Level Security and other access controls, diagnosing issues across the data pipeline, semantic model, dataset and Power BI report chain.

Define and maintain engineering, governance and operational standards, including data contracts, naming conventions, documentation, lineage, refresh dependencies, CI/CD, deployment pipelines and release management.

Collaborate with Product Managers, Data Scientists, HRIT, Data Engineering, Analytics, Security and Governance teams, providing technical direction, challenging designs and estimates where appropriate, and communicating complex concepts clearly to non-technical stakeholders.

Evolve the People data platform by applying Microsoft Fabric, OneLake, Azure, Databricks, Delta Lake, Synapse, Power BI, Tabular Editor, DAX Studio, XMLA endpoints and modern data architecture principles, while mentoring engineers and enabling responsible, explainable and well-governed AI experiences.

To be successful you will

Five to ten or more years of experience in business intelligence engineering or a related technology discipline, with proven experience delivering enterprise data and analytics solutions.

Expert knowledge of Power BI Desktop and Power BI Service, including semantic models, datasets, measures, relationships, deployment, performance optimisation and report integration.

Strong understanding of dimensional modelling, including star schemas, fact and dimension tables, slowly changing dimensions, relationships, hierarchies and reusable business logic.

Advanced proficiency in DAX, including complex measures, time intelligence, filter and row context, calculation logic and performance optimisation, together with strong SQL and data transformation skills.

Experience with Azure data services, Databricks, Synapse, Azure SQL or equivalent technologies, including ETL/ELT processes, ingestion, validation, monitoring, Delta Lake and Lakehouse architecture.

Experience implementing Power BI security and access controls, including Row-Level Security and Column-Level Security, within complex enterprise environments with multiple data sources and interdependent pipelines.

Demonstrated experience in Agile and product-oriented delivery environments, including solution design, sprint planning, estimation, prioritisation, production support, CI/CD, deployment pipelines and mentoring junior engineers and developers.

Strong stakeholder management, communication and architectural decision-making skills, with a product mindset and practical understanding of data governance, privacy, responsible AI, explainability, response quality and enterprise security requirements.
