Why HSBC
HSBC is one of the largest banking and financial services organisations in the world. Guided by our purpose of opening up a world of opportunity, our ambition is to become the world’s most trusted bank globally, putting customers at the heart of everything we do.
The Opportunity
This role focuses on keeping critical Linux and Unix infrastructure secure, current and reliable through patching, upgrades and automation. You’ll take ownership of in-place upgrades across RHEL estates and support core platform components including Veritas clustering and storage services. Working closely with DevOps and application teams you’ll enable consistent installations and configurations that meet agreed standards.
The work sits in a regulated environment where stability, risk control and clear communication matter. Success means smoother upgrade outcomes, fewer recurring issues and infrastructure that is easier to operate through automation. You’ll also support incident troubleshooting and partner with vendors when deeper investigation is needed.
What you'll be doing
- Support and manage Unix infrastructure tasks including patching and vulnerability remediation for services in scope
- Perform in-place upgrades from RHEL7 to 8 and RHEL8 to 9 using Leapp
- Install and configure applications in line with team requirements and standards
- Create, modify and configure file systems including SAN and VxFS file systems
- Automate repeatable Unix tasks using Ansible and standard deployment tools
- Execute Infoscale VCS patching and upgrades and support firmware upgrades
- Configure and maintain VCS installations and changes required for application needs
- Troubleshoot OS issues and raise vendor cases with RHEL and VCS where required
What we're looking for
- Bring proven Linux administration and architecture experience across the server lifecycle including provisioning, configuration, patching, upgrades and decommissioning
- Demonstrate hands-on capability performing in-place upgrades and resolving issues that arise during upgrades
- Apply hands-on experience with Veritas Volume Manager, VCS cluster and Veritas NetBackup client
- Partner effectively with DevOps and application teams to interpret requirements and implement standard installations and configurations
- Implement DR and role swap scenarios including replication approaches to meet required RPO and RTO outcomes
- Use shell or Python scripting to automate infrastructure activities
- Configure storage and file systems across NAS and SAN solutions in standalone and clustered environments including replication
- Work with network components and services including load balancers, routers, proxies and firewalls
Modernise Core Unix Platforms
If you want your work to translate into safer patching, smoother upgrades and infrastructure that operates with less manual effort this role offers plenty of scope. You’ll help keep essential services dependable by combining hands-on engineering with automation and strong partnering across teams. The role suits someone who enjoys improving how platforms run day to day while keeping a close eye on risk and stability. Apply to help shape a more secure and maintainable Unix and Linux estate at HSBC.
You’ll achieve more when you join HSBC.
