The Role
insightsoftware is a global provider of comprehensive solutions for the Office of the CFO. As a Software Development Engineer in Test 2 on the Certent Disclosure Management (CDM) team, you'll be an engineer first. You'll work inside the codebase alongside developers to make CDM testable at every level, pushing coverage down the test pyramid so that most quality is proven by fast, reliable unit, component, and integration tests rather than slow end-to-end suites. Working closely with development and DevOps, you'll help ensure CDM ships reliable, high-quality releases to enterprise customers.
What You Will Do
- Refactor production C# code to improve testability: introduce dependency injection, create seams, decouple components, and remove hard-coded dependencies.
- Write characterization tests to safely bring legacy code under test before changing it.
- Pair with developers on design and on unit, component, and integration test strategy, and help them write better tests themselves.
- Use AI coding agents to write and refactor tests and production code. Own the agent rule files and tooling that govern how they write tests (e.g., AGENTS.md, MCP servers).
- Define and evolve the team's test architecture, deciding what belongs at each level of the pyramid and actively shrinking reliance on E2E tests.
- Review PRs, including agent-generated changes, for testability, test quality, and coverage, not just for whether tests exist.
- Review requirements and acceptance criteria early to shape testable designs.
- Build and maintain quality gates in CI pipelines (test stages, coverage, reporting, flaky-test detection).
- Develop reusable test libraries, fixtures, and test data builders in C#.
- Maintain a lean, targeted set of E2E and UI tests (Selenium, Ranorex) for critical user journeys across web and desktop.
- Contribute to API and performance testing.
- Participate in stand-ups, sprint planning, and retrospectives.
What You Bring
Core Skills
- Strong proficiency in C# and .NET, with experience writing and refactoring production code, not only test code.
- Deep experience with unit testing frameworks (xUnit, NUnit, or MSTest) and mocking libraries (Moq, NSubstitute, or similar).
- Solid understanding of dependency injection, SOLID principles, and techniques for breaking dependencies in legacy code.
- Hands-on experience using AI coding agents (e.g., Claude Code, GitHub Copilot agent mode, Cursor), the judgment to spot weak or incorrect agent output, and the ability to teach others to do the same.
- Experience writing integration and component tests (e.g., WebApplicationFactory, Testcontainers, in-memory or containerized databases).
- A clear point of view on the test pyramid and when each type of test is the right tool.
- Experience with CI/CD and source control (Jenkins, Azure DevOps, Git, Bitbucket).
- Working experience with UI automation (Selenium, Ranorex, or similar).
- Experience in Agile Scrum/Kanban teams.
- Nice to Have
- TDD experience.
- BDD experience (e.g., Reqnroll, SpecFlow, Gherkin).
- Contract testing (e.g., Pact), mutation testing (e.g., Stryker.NET), coverage tooling (e.g., Coverlet).
- Performance or load testing experience.
- Experience in financial reporting or other regulated domains.
Experience
4+ years of software development experience, including writing and refactoring production C# code.
Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
