Work for the IMF. Work for the World.

Department: EUREA European Department

The European Department is looking to hire an Economist/Senior Economist to work in the Eastern Unit (EA) on Ukraine. The Fund supports the authorities through the US$8.1 billion Extended Fund Facility (EFF) approved by the Board in February 2026 which serves as the anchor for the broader international financing and reform effort. Working on Ukraine offers a unique opportunity to contribute to policy design and implementation in a high profile and exceptionally challenging environment while engaging with senior policymakers, international partners, and EUR front office.

The selected candidate will lead the team’s work on monetary policy, exchange rate policy, foreign exchange market developments, and capital flow management measures. There will be scope to cover other policy areas beyond her/his core domain, along with the potential to amend the sectoral allocations over time.

Key responsibilities include

Monitoring monetary and exchange rate developments and assessing their implications for program performance and macroeconomic stability.

Leading policy discussions with the National Bank of Ukraine on monetary policy implementation, exchange rate management, foreign exchange interventions, and the calibration and sequencing of capital flow management measures.

Contributing to program design, review negotiations, and the formulation of conditionality in areas related to monetary and exchange rate policies.

Preparing policy notes, analytical notes, briefing materials, and Board documents.

Contributing more broadly to the team's analytical and operational work, with opportunities to engage on a wider range of macroeconomic and structural policy issues.

The team engages with the authorities through high frequency virtual meetings, staff visits and quarterly EFF review missions. The successful candidate should be comfortable working under very tight deadlines and intense scrutiny, and would be expected to build excellent working relationships with country authorities, the World Bank and other multilateral institutions, as well as staff in functional departments.

This assignment counts towards the LIC/FCS experience requirement for promotion to A15 given Ukraine’s classification as a Fragile and Conflict-Affected State (FCS).

In addition to the qualifications set forth in the job standards, the successful candidate should have (i) excellent analytical and technical skills; (ii) sound judgement and the ability to formulate policy advice in a rapidly evolving setting; (iii) strong organizational skills, attention to detail and adaptability to deliver a substantial workload on very tight deadlines; (iv) a capacity to think creatively and independently, and identify out of the box solutions tailored to country circumstances; and (v) excellent interpersonal and communications skills with proven ability to work collaboratively both internally as a team player and externally with country authorities.

Previous experience working on programs, or on large emerging market economies, particularly on monetary and external sector issues, would be distinct advantages.
