Reporting to the Vice President, Market Access and Strategic Customers, the role translates the Market Access strategy and J&J Innovative Medicine Canada Vision into clear plans, aligned field execution, and measurable outcomes that support timely and sustainable access to innovative medicines across Canada.

The Director brings together external insights from governments, payers, health systems, patient organizations, policy stakeholders, and industry partners. The role identifies emerging risks and opportunities, recommends responsive actions, and ensures insights are shared with the appropriate internal partners to inform reimbursement strategy, launch readiness, stakeholder engagement, and portfolio planning.

This is a visible external and people leadership role. The Director represents J&J within an approved mandate, builds trusted stakeholder relationships, and creates the conditions for nationally distributed teams to work with clarity, consistency, accountability, and strong compliance.

Key Responsibilities

Lead implementation of the national Field Market Access plan across Strategic Healthcare Partners, Patient Engagement Managers, Provincial and Federal Government Affairs, and Strategic Access Managers, in alignment with the strategy and priorities established by the Vice President, Market Access and the Market Access Leadership Team.

Translate functional priorities into annual objectives, workplans, success measures, decision pathways, and coordinated field activity across the teams reporting to the role.

Monitor policy, reimbursement, payer, and health system developments; assess potential implications; and provide clear recommendations to senior Market Access leadership on risks, opportunities, and required actions.

Guide stakeholder engagement strategies and represent J&J with government officials, payers, health system leaders, patient organizations, policy stakeholders, trade associations, and industry partners within the role’s approved authority.

Build and maintain trusted external relationships and support compliant partnerships that advance patient access, system readiness, and shared healthcare priorities.

Bring external insights into the organization and partner with Medical Affairs, Commercial, Communications and Public Affairs, Legal, Regulatory, Compliance, Health Economics and Outcomes Research, and Patient Engagement to support integrated plans, consistent positions, and the cross-functional, enterprise-focused ways of working established through the J&J Innovative Medicine Canada Vision.

Contribute field and stakeholder perspectives to reimbursement strategy, launch planning, evidence needs, value communication, and portfolio decisions.

Lead, coach, and develop a nationally distributed team; set clear expectations; strengthen collaboration across functions; support succession and capability building; and manage performance in line with company processes.

Establish effective team operating rhythms, clarify roles and escalation points, track delivery against agreed outcomes, and address execution gaps in a timely way.

Manage the team budget and resources within approved plans, recommend adjustments when priorities change, and ensure responsible stewardship.

Ensure high standards of quality, safety, ethics, compliance, privacy, and business conduct across all activities.

Contribute as an active member of the Market Access Leadership Team and sponsor selected functional initiatives as assigned

Leadership and Decision Scope

The Director has direct and indirect leadership accountability across Strategic Healthcare Partners, Strategic Access Managers, Patient Engagement Managers, and Government Affairs leaders, consistent with the approved organization design. The role sets team objectives within the established Market Access strategy, assigns work, reviews performance, makes hiring and talent recommendations, contributes to pay and promotion discussions, manages the approved budget, and recommends resource shifts or escalations to the Vice President, Market Access & Strategic Customers.

The Director is expected to exercise sound judgement in complex situations and may make sound decisions within agreed strategies, policies, budgets, and delegated authority. Enterprise positions, significant investment choices, material changes in external strategy, and issues with broader business or reputational implications are aligned with or escalated to the Vice President, Market Access & Strategic Customers and the appropriate governance partners.
