Your Job
This role is part of Guardian's GRD Infrastructure Operations team, focused on AWS cloud services and cloud-native technologies. Infrastructure Operations governs Guardian's AWS accounts and services, and supports the business as it adopts new technologies. The role also owns our cloud-native platform: Kubernetes on AWS (EKS) and at the edge (RKE2). More and more teams use it to build modern applications and to modernize existing ones. The role leans toward architecture: designing how the platform works, helping teams onboard, and building cloud-native skills across the company.
What You Will Do
Cloud Native Platform
- Build, upgrade and operate Kubernetes clusters in AWS (EKS) and at edge sites (RKE2), managed through Rancher.
- Deliver platform services through GitOps with Argo CD: autoscaling (Karpenter), ingress and load balancing,
- storage, secrets management, workload identity, observability and security scanning.
- Manage infrastructure as code (Terraform/OpenTofu, AWS Controllers for Kubernetes), including a shared
- Terraform platform other teams use to deploy resources.
- Maintain our GitLab environment: CI/CD runners, pipeline templates, access and security settings.
- Set up guardrails so many teams can share the platform safely: namespaces, Argo CD projects, RBAC and network
- policy.
- Onboard teams with templates, documentation and hands-on support, and help optimize existing workloads.
- Keep the platform reliable: Datadog monitoring and alerting, capacity planning, backup and recovery, and incident
- response.
Cloud Engineering
- Support AWS services and the business applications built on them.
- Review new requirements with the Solution and Architecture team and help set strategy.
- Define and enforce cloud best practices for availability, performance, security, IAM and cost.
- Drive cloud fluency across other teams.
Who You Are (Basic Qualifications)
- Experience with AWS, including EKS, IAM, VPC networking.
- Proven experience configuring and running production workloads on Kubernetes.
- Hands-on experience with Argo CD (or another GitOps tool), Helm and Rancher.
- Experience with Terraform (or OpenTofu), CI/CD pipelines (GitLab CI preferred), and AWS ACK
- Comfortable in Linux and scripting in Python, Bash or Go.
- Understanding of workload identity (EKS Pod Identity, Azure Workload Identity) and secrets management.
- Strong communicator who can explain technical ideas to anyone from engineers to leadership, and who writes
- clear documentation and training material.
- Track record of sharing knowledge and growing others' cloud-native skills.
- High curiosity for new technologies.
What Will Put You Ahead
Karpenter, Gateway API, Cluster API or progressive delivery (Argo Rollouts)
Azure experience
Running AI/LLM workloads (e.g., Amazon Bedrock)
