Our team is solving the world’s toughest security challenges for customers with “can’t fail” missions.
Leidos Defense is seeking an Electrical Design Engineer to join our Huntsville team. If you’re the person with a bench full of side projects and you’d rather build the thing than hand it off, read on.
The role
You’ll own electrical designs from the first block diagram to a working prototype on the bench. That means choosing off-the-shelf parts where they fit, designing custom circuits where they don’t, building and testing your own hardware, and documenting it so it’s ready for production. The work spans power, RF, controls, and analog and digital design.
What you’ll do
- Own designs end to end: requirements, architecture, schematics, prototyping, test, and release
- Solve complex electrical problems with off-the-shelf parts or custom solutions
- Work across power distribution, RF design, logic/controls, and custom analog and digital circuits
- Build, bring up, and debug prototypes, then iterate quickly
- Test with VNAs, spectrum analyzers, network analyzers, multimeters, and lab power supplies/loads
- Create block diagrams for top-level systems and lower-level sub-assemblies
- Document and release designs in KiCAD, SolidWorks Electrical, Visio, or similar
- Team up with project teams on a broad range of products and applications
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or a STEM discipline from an ABET-accredited school with 4+ years of directly applicable experience, or an MS with 2+ years of relevant experience
- Demonstrated design work in a CAD package similar to SolidWorks and SolidWorks Electrical
- Strong understanding of electrical system-level design
- Ability to design for rapid prototyping and fabrication in a dynamic environment
- U.S. Citizen with a Final Secret clearance, or eligibility to obtain and maintain one
- Resident of, or willing to relocate to, the Huntsville, AL area
You’ll stand out if you
Have side projects you’re proud of, such as custom PCBs, RF experiments, robotics, power supplies, or test fixtures, and can show them off
Are as comfortable with a soldering iron and scope as with a CAD station
Have designed power, data, and RF systems, including 3-phase, split-phase, and DC power
Read and draw electrical schematics and cable diagrams, and know some fiber optic communications
Have used KiCAD, Mentor DxDesigner, Altium, OrCAD, or similar, plus 2D/3D CAD like SolidWorks, SolidWorks Electrical, AutoCAD, or Visio
Understand basic mechanical concepts well enough to work smoothly with mechanical designers
Can document designs, assist with Technical Data Packages (TDPs), and support production and test
Hold an active Secret clearance or higher
Show us what you’ve built. Include links to side projects, a portfolio, or GitHub with your application. We care about what you can do, not just where you’ve done it.
If you're looking for comfort, keep scrolling. At Leidos, we outthink, outbuild, and outpace the status quo — because the mission demands it. We're not hiring followers. We're recruiting the ones who disrupt, provoke, and refuse to fail. Step 10 is ancient history. We're already at step 30 — and moving faster than anyone else dares.
