About the role
Job ID: 115755
Location: Germantown, MD
Business Unit: DRS RADA Technologies
Schedule: 9/80
Shift: First
DRS RADA Technologies, a subsidiary of Leonardo DRS, is focused on proprietary radar solutions and legacy avionics systems supporting the defense industry globally. The company is a global pioneer of AESA tactical radars for active military protection, counter-drone applications, critical infrastructure protection, and border surveillance.
About the Role
DRS RADA Technologies is seeking a full-time, on-site Software Engineer II — Test Automation to build and maintain automated test tools, frameworks, and repeatable verification workflows for mission-critical radar and defense software. This hands-on role is part of the software organization and is ideal for an engineer who enjoys programming, scripting, automation, and troubleshooting to improve software quality, regression coverage, and release confidence.
Prior radar, defense, or real-time software experience is helpful but not required; we value strong software fundamentals, practical automation experience, curiosity, and the ability to learn complex technical domains. Candidates with Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET), test automation, software tools, or automation-focused software engineering backgrounds may be a strong fit.
What You Will Do
- Build, test, debug, and maintain automated test tools, scripts, frameworks, and test harnesses that support software verification and regression testing.
- Develop automated tests for software components, services, integrated workflows, and recurring regression scenarios.
- Convert manual or repeatable test procedures into automated tests, reusable utilities, and documented workflows.
- Support automated testing in Linux, Docker, virtual machine, simulation, and system-integration environments.
- Integrate automated tests into CI/CD workflows and help improve the visibility, repeatability, and usefulness of test results.
- Work with software, systems, integration, and test engineers to understand expected behavior, reproduce issues, and improve test coverage.
- Support targeted automated testing of selected radar software components where practical.
- Document test automation tools and workflows so they can be reused and extended by the broader team.
What You Bring
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering, computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, or a related technical field, plus at least two years of relevant software, test automation, or software tools experience, or equivalent experience.
- Experience building automation tools, test scripts, test frameworks, or developer-facing software utilities.
- Strong programming ability in Python or another general-purpose programming language, with the ability to write maintainable code that can be reviewed, reused, and extended by other engineers.
- Experience testing, debugging, or troubleshooting software in development, integration, lab, or system-level environments.
- Familiarity with software test concepts such as unit testing, integration testing, regression testing, defect reproduction, automated test execution, and clear pass/fail criteria.
- Experience using Git and working in a collaborative software development or test environment.
- Ability to translate manual test procedures, expected behaviors, or recurring verification needs into automated tests, tools, or documented workflows.
- Experience with Linux-based environments, CI/CD workflows, Docker, virtual machines, message-based systems, embedded or real-time software, hardware/software integration, or mission-critical systems is helpful but not required.
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work effectively with software, systems, integration, and test engineers.
- U.S. citizenship is required. A current security clearance is not required, but the ability to obtain and maintain a DoD security clearance may be needed for future program work.
What This Role Is Not
- This is not a manual-only test execution role; the focus is reusable automation, test frameworks, tools, and repeatable workflows.
- This is not a traditional test group position; the role is part of the software organization and works closely with development teams.
- This is not a cyber scanning, vulnerability remediation, radar algorithm development, or hardware technician role; the primary output of this role is software-based test automation.
- This is not a remote position; the role is full-time and on-site in Germantown, Maryland.
- This is not work performed in isolation; the engineer will collaborate closely with software, systems, integration, hardware, and test teams.
What We Bring
At DRS RADA Technologies, your work supports technologies that help protect military personnel, critical infrastructure, and communities around the world. You will join a mission-driven team developing advanced radar technology that supports system performance and real-world defense applications.

U.S. Citizenship required. This position requires an active DOD security clearance or the ability to obtain such clearance within a reasonable time after commencement of employment.
The expected salary range for this position is $91,907 to $119,480 per year. The final offer will reflect factors such as the role’s scope, applicable market conditions, internal equity, and the candidate’s experience, skills, education, training, and certifications.
