The Opportunity

Mawer is looking for an AI Orchestrator Student to help scale our investment research process using the internal AI platform we've built. We want a curious systems thinker who can understand how investment work gets done, map workflows end to end, identify where AI can add value and turn promising ideas into reliable solutions.

Consider the investment lifecycle: screening, deep-dive analysis, decision journaling, portfolio monitoring and risk management. You'll work closely with research analysts, portfolio managers and engineers to connect these activities, not just build isolated tools. This isn't primarily a build-from-scratch engineering role, but you'll be hands-on.

We're particularly interested in students approaching graduation, ideally in their final academic term, who may want to explore a full-time opportunity after the placement. Any future role would depend on mutual fit and business needs.

What Makes This Opportunity Different

Our team actively embraces AI experimentation. We work with a wide range of model APIs and AI coding tools, as well as self-hosted GPUs for open-weight models and, where useful, fine-tuning. You'll explore these capabilities in the context of real investment research problems, with feedback from people who use the results.

Duties and Responsibilities

What You'll Work On

Connected research workflows - explore how screening, company analysis, decision journaling and monitoring fit together, and where AI can make the overall process better

Intelligent monitoring and decision support - synthesize company developments and market events, track changes in investment thinking and surface risk signals or questions worth investigating

Research data and knowledge systems - help make investment information consistent, accessible and reusable through existing data, retrieval and AI tools

Key Responsibilities

  • Work with analysts and portfolio managers to understand research workflows end to end, ask thoughtful questions and identify opportunities where AI could improve the process
  • Design and prototype connected AI workflows using existing models, agents, prompts, data and tools; collaborate with engineers when deeper integrations are needed
  • Use AI-assisted coding to build and iterate on practical solutions, rather than waiting for every detail to be specified
  • Evaluate outputs for accuracy, source quality, reliability and usefulness; learn from user feedback and document important trade-offs
  • Take ownership of a focused deliverable, communicate what you've learned and adapt as priorities and AI capabilities evolve while following through on promising work

Who You Are

You have relentless curiosity. You want to understand how businesses work, how investors think and how AI can help. Prior finance experience isn't required.

You're a connector, not a silo. You see how screening feeds analysis, analysis feeds monitoring and monitoring feeds risk review. You improve the overall workflow, not just a point solution.

You ship, not just theorize. You've prototyped something using AI, can explain why and how, and care whether people use it. You don't need to be a software engineer.

You're adaptable and you follow through. You enjoy exploring new tools and can shift direction when evidence changes, without losing sight of delivering useful results.

You're comfortable wearing different hats. One day you're mapping a research process, the next prototyping a workflow or discussing results with an analyst. You ask good questions and collaborate well.

Valuable Experience

Hands-on experience building with AI-assisted coding tools such as Cursor, Claude Code, GitHub Copilot or similar; personal, academic and hackathon projects count

Experimentation with open-weight models on GPUs, at home or in academic or research settings; experience evaluating or fine-tuning models is a plus, not a requirement

Genuine interest in understanding businesses, investment research, financial analysis or capital markets; professional experience is not required

Experience with LLMs, prompts, agents, workflow automation, APIs or data tools; familiarity with Python or SQL is helpful

Ability to explain why you built something, how the pieces fit together, what you tested and what you learned

To apply

We're keen to understand what you've built, why and how, rather than your title, years of experience or toolkit. School, personal and independent projects all count. Tell us about a problem you spotted, the AI workflow you tried, how you tested it and what you’d improve next.
