Overview
Artificial intelligence is changing the scale at which cloud infrastructure must operate, creating new challenges in network capacity, reliability, automation and architecture. Azure Global Networking designs, builds, operates and evolves the network that connects Microsoft's datacenters to each other and to the world. You will join a team working on the next generation of Microsoft's global network infrastructure. We are evolving how large-scale networks are designed, validated, deployed and operated, bringing together packet and optical networking, disaggregated network systems, network hardware, software and increasingly sophisticated automation.
As these networks grow, we are also designing for smaller failure domains, greater automation and simpler, more predictable operations.
As a Senior Cloud Network Engineer, you will create and modify network topologies, configurations and designs and help take them from engineering and validation into production. You will work across network architecture, routing, hardware, optics, telemetry and automation to build reliable, secure, scalable and high-performance network infrastructure. This opportunity will allow you to deepen your expertise in hyperscale network architecture, Software for Open Networking in the Cloud (SONiC), disaggregated networking, merchant-silicon hardware, optical technologies including Optical Circuit Switching (OCS), automated network validation and production network engineering.
You will work directly with live infrastructure, using operational experience and production data to improve designs, automation and reliability.
Microsoft's mission is to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more. We come together with a growth mindset, innovate to empower others and collaborate to realize our shared goals. Each day we build on our values of respect, integrity and accountability to create a culture of inclusion where everyone can thrive at work and beyond.
Responsibilities
Create and modify network topologies, configurations and patterns that contribute to the design, implementation and operation of reliable, secure, scalable and high-performance networks.
Propose network designs or architectural modifications, and participate in architecture reviews covering performance, scale, reliability, security and operational requirements.
Develop secure and reliable automation, including infrastructure as code, that improves engineering efficiency, reduces operational burden and human error, and enables sustainable network operations at scale.
Develop automated testing and validation for network devices, firmware and configurations, including failure and reliability scenarios, and work across internal engineering teams and external hardware and technology partners to bring solutions safely into production.
Use telemetry and production data to identify patterns, improve detection and troubleshooting, understand network behavior and develop measurable improvements in network reliability and operation.
Diagnose and root cause complex service-impacting issues across physical network components, device operating systems, network management systems and Application Programming Interfaces (APIs), converting incident learnings into secure, automated and sustainable improvements.
Participate in on-call duties for the production network, provide technical guidance during incidents, contribute to postmortem and root-cause analysis, and mentor other engineers in network engineering and live-site practices.
Required/minimum qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field AND technical experience in network design, development, and automation OR equivalent experience.
Technical experience in the design, development, automation or operation of large-scale network infrastructure.
Experience with network architecture and routing protocols, including Border Gateway Protocol (BGP), Intermediate System to Intermediate System (IS-IS), or comparable interior and exterior routing technologies.
Experience designing, implementing, validating or troubleshooting Internet Protocol (IP) and Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) networks in production environments.
Experience developing or using network automation, infrastructure as code, Application Programming Interfaces (APIs), or software-based tooling to configure, validate, monitor or operate network infrastructure.
Experience troubleshooting complex production network issues across routing, network operating systems, hardware, telemetry or automation layers.
Experience delivering network designs or substantial network changes into production and participating in live-site or on-call accountability for a network.
