Overview
Join the team that powers productivity for millions of people around the world. Excel is more than a spreadsheet. It is a platform used by students, scientists, business leaders, and organizations to analyze information, solve problems, and get work done.
The Excel Agent team is building intelligent, agentic experiences designed to make advanced Excel capabilities more accessible. Users can describe what they want to accomplish in natural language, and the agent can understand workbook context and user intent, plan and complete multi-step tasks using Excel capabilities, and validate results before presenting them to the user. Our goal is to build experiences that people can trust with real work while ensuring outputs remain editable, understandable, and easy to verify.
As a Senior Software Engineer on the Excel Agent team, you will design and deliver end-to-end features that combine Excel capabilities with agentic AI. You will own technical areas spanning client and service components, contribute to technical direction, improve quality and reliability, and support the development of other engineers through design reviews, code reviews, and mentoring.
You will collaborate with engineering, product, design, applied science, security, and privacy partners to build scalable and responsible AI-powered experiences. The team uses AI throughout the engineering lifecycle while maintaining accountability for the quality, security, reliability, and performance of the resulting systems.
Microsoft’s mission is to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more. As employees, we come together with a growth mindset, innovate to empower others, and collaborate to realize our shared goals. Each day, we build on our values of respect, integrity, and accountability to create a culture of inclusion where everyone can thrive at work and beyond.
Responsibilities
Provide technical leadership for an area of Excel Agent, contributing to technical direction and driving delivery from design through production.
Design solutions spanning client and service components that enable the agent to understand workbook context and user intent, complete multi-step tasks, and validate results.
Evaluate performance, scalability, resiliency, disaster recovery, security, and cost considerations when designing and reviewing technical solutions.
Establish and improve quality standards for agentic experiences, including evaluation methods, telemetry, monitoring, and guardrails that support reliable and responsible behavior at scale.
Define and execute testing strategies for assigned areas, including unit, integration, regression, and security testing, and use automation to improve coverage and prevent regressions.
Participate in and lead incident response as a Designated Responsible Individual (DRI), including mitigation, post-incident reviews, root-cause analysis, and implementation of reliability improvements.
Apply disciplined AI-assisted development practices by reviewing, validating, and taking responsibility for AI-generated code, designs, tests, and other engineering artifacts. Support other engineers in applying similar practices.
Collaborate with product, design, applied science, engineering, security, and privacy partners to translate customer needs and AI capabilities into technical plans that meet applicable security, privacy, responsible AI, and accessibility requirements.
Break down complex or ambiguous technical work into well-defined projects and engineering tasks and deliver secure, tested, and maintainable code across client and service components.
Support deployment automation and safe rollout practices using mechanisms such as feature flags, success and guardrail metrics, monitoring, and rollback plans.
Partner with other teams on shared components, interfaces, and engineering patterns and contribute improvements to shared technologies where appropriate.
Mentor engineers through technical discussions, design reviews, and code reviews, and contribute to engineering standards for code quality, reliability, maintainability, and observability
