Senior Software Engineer

Overview

The Vancouver PowerPoint Product Group is looking for a Senior Software Engineer to design and build AI-powered experiences in PowerPoint for the web. Our team uses advances in language and vision models, agents, and AI technologies to help millions of people create, edit, and collaborate on presentations while protecting the security and privacy of customer content.

As a Senior Software Engineer, you will be a hands-on technical leader working across the PowerPoint for the web stack. You will design and deliver end-to-end AI-powered features, from early experimentation and prototyping through production deployment and operation at global scale. You will own technical areas spanning client experiences, architecture, and integrations with AI and agent services, and influence technical direction within your area.

You will help define engineering approaches for building secure, reliable, and maintainable AI experiences. This includes evaluating architectural trade-offs, raising the quality and security bar, establishing effective testing and evaluation strategies, and designing protections against traditional and AI-specific security risks such as prompt injection, data exfiltration, and unsafe agent actions.

You will work closely with engineers, Product Management, Design, Applied Science, Research, Security, and Privacy partners to turn customer needs and emerging AI capabilities into reliable product experiences. You will also mentor engineers and help improve engineering practices across the team.

Responsibilities

Lead the design, implementation, testing, deployment, and operation of AI-powered features in PowerPoint for the web, driving delivery from early prototypes through production at global scale.

Own technical areas across the PowerPoint for the web stack, including front-end experiences, client architecture, and integration with AI and agent services, and contribute to technical direction for the engineers working in those areas.

Lead technical designs and evaluate architectural trade-offs related to performance, scalability, reliability, maintainability, security, privacy, AI safety, and cost.

Apply secure-by-design engineering practices, including threat modeling, secure coding, dependency management, security testing, and appropriate mitigations for AI-specific risks such as prompt injection, data exfiltration, and unsafe agent actions.

Define and drive quality strategies for owned features, including automated testing, AI evaluation, telemetry, monitoring, performance measurement, and appropriate success and guardrail metrics.

Drive safe deployment and production readiness for owned areas using deployment automation, feature flags, staged rollouts, monitoring, validation, and rollback mechanisms.

Act as a Designated Responsible Individual (DRI) for owned areas and help drive incident response, mitigation, root-cause analysis, and follow-up improvements that strengthen service reliability and prevent recurrence.

Work closely with Product Management, Design, Research, Applied Science, Security, and Privacy partners to translate ambiguous customer needs and emerging AI technologies into product direction and actionable technical plans.

Use AI-assisted development tools and practices throughout the software development lifecycle while reviewing, validating, and taking responsibility for AI-generated code, designs, tests, and other engineering artifacts.

Drive alignment with partner teams on dependencies, shared components, APIs, architecture, security requirements, and engineering patterns needed to deliver end-to-end customer experiences.

Identify opportunities to improve performance, reliability, maintainability, security, developer productivity, and engineering efficiency within owned areas.

Review technical designs and code, provide actionable technical feedback, and mentor engineers to improve engineering quality, security, reliability, and technical decision-making.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 4+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python OR equivalent experience.

• This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications

Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript/TypeScript, or Python OR Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript/TypeScript, or Python OR equivalent experience.

Experience designing and delivering complex web applications, client architectures, or large-scale production services.

Experience developing AI or LLM-powered product experiences, including integration with language models, multimodal models, agents, tool use/function calling, or related AI technologies.

Experience with AI security and safety practices, such as threat modeling, prompt-injection defenses, data protection, agent security, or evaluation and guardrail systems.

Experience defining testing, evaluation, telemetry, and quality strategies for AI-powered features or production software.

Experience evaluating performance, scalability, reliability, security, and architectural trade-offs in complex production systems.

Experience leading technical designs across multiple components, driving cross-team technical alignment, and delivering features from design through production.

Experience mentoring engineers and contributing to improvements in engineering quality, security, reliability, or development practices.

Effective communication skills and experience collaborating across Engineering, Product Management, Design, Applied Science, Research, Security, and Privacy teams.

Software Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across Canada is CAD $114,400 - CAD $203,900 per year.
