Moran Towing Corporation Transportation

Risk Manager

Jacksonville, FL In person Full-time

Company Overview

As one of America’s oldest continuously operating companies, Moran has prospered for over 165 years by continually adapting and evolving. Founded as a single tugboat operator, Moran has grown from its harbor roots into a leading provider of harbor towage, bulk marine transportation, rail operations, environmental remediation, commercial diving, and marine construction services.

Position Overview

The Risk Manager will be the analytical owner of risk financing and claims administration and is responsible for supporting Moran's enterprise-wide insurance programs across its maritime, environmental, industrial, infrastructure, and rail operations. The position coordinates insurance renewals, manages insurance allocations and aggregate deductible analysis, serves as an enterprise resource regarding policy coverage questions, and works collaboratively with operations, finance, legal, human resources, and external vendors to minimize operational and financial risk.

The Risk Manager will help ensure that Moran maintains efficient insurance coverage, regulatory compliance, and risk management practices that support the Company's strategic objectives. The role reflects Moran's commitment to safety, environmental stewardship, operational excellence, and continuous improvement.

Responsibilities

Risk Management and Loss Prevention

  • Support development and implementation of enterprise risk management initiatives.
  • Monitor operational, financial, legal, regulatory, and reputational risks.
  • Assist business units in evaluating and mitigating operational exposures.
  • Partner with Safety, Operations, and Legal departments to implement loss-prevention strategies.
  • Participate, as appropriate, in audits, inspections, tabletop exercises, and incident response planning.
  • Track corrective actions arising from incidents, audits, and claims reviews.
  • Monitor risk management practices for compliance with applicable maritime, environmental, transportation, employment, and insurance requirements.

Insurance Analytics and Management Reporting

  • Develop meaningful analytics regarding premiums, losses, deductibles, reserves, insurance recoveries, claim frequency/severity, and total cost of risk. Identify trends by business unit, operation, geography, loss type, insurer, or policy year.
  • Build dashboards and recurring management reporting that translate insurance and claims information into actionable business insights and support renewal strategy and executive decision-making.
  • Use claims and insurance data to identify recurring drivers of loss and work with Safety, Operations, Legal, Finance, Human Resources, Fleet, and business-unit leadership to address them.
  • Translate insurance information into prevention strategies, for example, identifying particular vessel operations, injury types, contractual exposures, locations, or equipment that disproportionately contribute to losses.
  • Measure whether corrective initiatives actually reduce frequency, severity, or retained cost.
  • Assist with budgeting related to insurance premiums, deductibles, and retained exposures.
  • Support data collection for regulatory, insurer, and corporate reporting requirements.

Insurance Program Management

  • Develop and maintain detailed knowledge of Moran's insurance program, including marine and non-marine programs.
  • Evaluate limits, retentions, captive or alternative-risk opportunities, and the appropriate balance between retained and transferred risk.
  • Develop recommendations based on loss history, exposure growth, market conditions, and total cost of risk rather than simply renewing the existing program.
  • Develop and implement a Certificate of Insurance workflow to facilitate requests from business partners and turnaround from Moran’s broker partners.
  • Coordinate policy renewal submissions and renewal exhibit collection and escalate any potential non-renewal issues as appropriate.
  • Review contracts to verify compliance with insurance requirements and evaluate coverage issues with internal business owners to facilitate resolutions with brokers.
  • Develop and maintain consolidated enterprise insurance schedules, policy records, endorsements, and renewal calendar.

Claims Management

  • Provide leadership and oversight to claims managers handling marine, liability, property, workers’ compensation, auto, and other insured or retained claims.
  • Maintain disciplined processes for identifying potentially covered events, providing timely notice to insurers and P&I clubs, complying with policy conditions, and protecting the company’s rights under its policies.
  • Track insurer acknowledgments, reservations of rights, coverage issues, reimbursement requests, and recoveries.
  • Coordinate with Legal and brokers on disputed coverage matters and ensure potentially recoverable amounts do not remain buried within operational or claims expenses.
  • Escalate any potential claims with litigation risk for Legal review and action and coordinate management of litigated matters.
  • Regularly review high reserve claims and aging claims and challenge reserves, strategy, and closure plans where appropriate.

Qualifications & Requirements

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Risk Management, Insurance, Business Administration, Finance, Maritime Studies, Law, or a related field required.
  • Five (5) to Eight (8) years of progressively responsible experience in risk management, commercial or marine insurance, claims, legal, maritime operations, or a related field, with two (2) years in a management capacity.
  • Strong financial and analytical experience, including analysis of loss runs, severity trends, deductible spending, premium allocation, and total cost of risk.
  • Experience building dashboards and working with systems such as Power BI, Origami Risk Information System or other similar RMIS tools.
  • Strong knowledge of insurance principles, claims management, and contractual risk transfer.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication abilities.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and claims/risk management systems.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound professional judgment.
