Software Engineer – Commercial Planning & Estate Management
A bit about us
At Nando's, we're on a mission to Create Lasting Happiness, and technology plays a huge part in making that happen.
Behind every great restaurant experience is a lot of clever technology. From helping our restaurants plan how much food they'll need to managing opening hours and keeping our restaurant information accurate, our engineering teams build the systems that make life easier for our Nandocas (that's what we call our people).
We're looking for a Software Engineer to join our Commercial Planning & Estate Management (CPEM) team. It's a great opportunity to work on meaningful engineering challenges, get involved across different technologies and build products that make a genuine difference to how our restaurants operate.
You'll join a collaborative team where you'll have the freedom to contribute ideas, take ownership of your work and develop your skills alongside people who genuinely enjoy what they do.
What's the team all about?
Our CPEM team builds and looks after the technology that helps Nando's restaurants run smoothly every day.
We work across several products, each tackling a different challenge:
Forecast: Helping restaurants predict sales and plan food requirements, so they have what they need, when they need it.
Hours: Managing restaurant opening hours and closures, making sure accurate information reaches everything from delivery platforms to customer-facing systems.
Restaurant Master Data: Keeping the information about our restaurants accurate, consistent and available to the systems that rely on it.
Access Maintain: Connecting our estate maintenance platform with our wider data ecosystem to give teams better access to the information they need.
We also work with Anaplan, our planning platform, building and maintaining the data integrations that support business planning.
There's plenty of variety here. You'll work across existing products while also having opportunities to get involved in new challenges as the team continues to evolve.
The tech you'll get to work with
We're not tied to one language or framework, and we're always looking for sensible ways to improve how we build software.
Our current stack includes
- Backend: TypeScript, Node.js and Go
- Frontend: React and Svelte
- Data: PostgreSQL, Firestore and BigQuery
- Cloud & Infrastructure: Google Cloud Platform (GCP) and Terraform
- You don't need to have worked with every technology on this list. We're much more interested in engineers with strong fundamentals, curiosity and a willingness to learn.
What you'll be getting up to
This is a hands-on engineering role where you'll have the opportunity to get involved in the full software development lifecycle, from shaping ideas through to seeing your work running in production.
You'll be
- Designing, building, testing and delivering software that helps our restaurants and support teams work more effectively.
- Working across different services and products, tackling a mixture of new features, improvements and interesting technical challenges.
- Taking ownership of what you build, helping to keep our services reliable, performant and running smoothly.
- Getting involved in technical discussions, sharing ideas and contributing to decisions about how we design and improve our systems.
- Investigating problems, improving existing code and finding opportunities to automate repetitive tasks.
- Working directly with colleagues across the business to understand real challenges and turn them into practical technical solutions.
- Collaborating with other engineers through pairing, code reviews and knowledge sharing.
- Helping the team continuously improve how we build, test, deploy and operate our software.
- Supporting the investigation of production issues during working hours and learning from incidents as a team.
- We want you to feel comfortable challenging ideas, asking questions and suggesting better ways of doing things. You won't just be here to pick up tickets and write code.
What we're looking for
We're looking for someone who's already built a solid foundation as a Software Engineer and is ready to keep growing.
You'll ideally bring
- Professional software engineering experience, including building, deploying and supporting applications or services in production.
- Good hands-on experience with TypeScript and Node.js.
- Experience with Go, Rust or Java, or an interest in learning Go.
- An understanding of automated testing and why it matters when building reliable software.
- Experience working with SQL or document-based databases.
- Some exposure to cloud platforms, ideally GCP, and Infrastructure as Code.
- A practical approach to problem-solving, debugging and writing clean, maintainable code.
- Experience working in an agile, collaborative engineering environment.
- Good communication skills and the confidence to share your thoughts, ask questions and learn from others.
- It would also be great if you have experience with:
- React or Svelte
Terraform
- BigQuery or GraphQL
- Observability and monitoring tools such as OpenTelemetry
- Systems involving forecasting, planning or master data
- Don't worry if you can't tick every box. We know great engineers come from different backgrounds, and we're interested in what you can bring as well as what you're keen to learn.
- What your first few months could look like
- When you join, we'll give you the time and support to get familiar with our products, technology and ways of working.
- You'll start by getting to know the team, understanding the systems we look after and picking up work that helps you build confidence in the codebase.
- As you settle in, you'll take on more ownership, contribute to technical decisions and work across a wider range of products and challenges.
- There's real opportunity to broaden your technical experience here, whether that's getting more hands-on with Go, deepening your cloud knowledge or developing your ability to design and own services end to end.
- Why Nando's?
- We're a restaurant business at heart, but there's a lot more technology behind Nando's than you might expect.
- Our engineers work on real problems, build products used across our business and have the opportunity to see the impact of what they create.
- We're big believers in collaboration, learning from each other and giving people the space to do their best work.
- And while we take engineering seriously, we don't believe work has to feel overly corporate. We want people to enjoy being part of the team, bring their personalities to work and feel comfortable being themselves.
- Our values of Pride, Passion, Integrity, Courage and Family aren't just words on a wall. They're part of how we work together and how we treat each other.
- If you're a Software Engineer who enjoys solving problems, wants to keep learning and likes the idea of building technology that makes a real difference, we'd love to hear from you.
