About the opportunity

We moved to Snowflake a year ago and have just implemented dbt with Git. The foundations are in place. Now we need a hands-on lead to embed them, lift the team's capability, and scale data engineering across HealthShare NSW.

You'll work on NSW Health's Snowflake platform, provided by eHealth NSW, which also supplies key data sources and our ingestion tools. You'll get the most from the platform as it stands, and build the case for change where it counts.

What you'll do

  • Lead data onboarding across a range of ingestion methods, delivering clean, documented raw data the team can rely on.
  • Own code governance across Snowflake, dbt and Git: repository structure, modelling conventions, testing and deployment (CI/CD).
  • Act as primary pull request approver, using review to raise quality and build capability.
  • Guide the design of models and solutions built by data engineers and BI developers.
  • Improve pipeline reliability through monitoring, alerting and automated data quality checks.
  • Manage secure access to sensitive health and staff data, in line with privacy and cyber-security requirements.
  • Optimise workload performance and cost.
  • Partner with eHealth NSW and other data providers on onboarding, upstream changes and platform improvements.
  • Lead and develop a small team of data engineers, then grow a data engineering community of practice across HealthShare NSW.
  • Represent HealthShare NSW in NSW Health data strategy forums on security and platform standards.

About you

Essential

  • Proven experience leading data engineering in a large or complex organisation, with a strong track record in data ingestion and onboarding.
  • Hands-on production experience with Snowflake or dbt, and Git-based development.
  • Experience setting engineering standards and reviewing other developers' code.
  • A track record of coaching developers who are new to a technology or practice.
  • Sound understanding of role-based access, privacy and regulated data.
  • Experience working effectively with a platform provider or shared-service team.
  • The ability to explain technical decisions and trade-offs clearly to non-technical audiences.
  • Relevant tertiary qualifications or equivalent experience.
  • Highly regarded
  • Experience with both Snowflake and dbt Core (or an equivalent modern cloud data stack).
  • Snowflake or cloud data platform administration experience.
  • Experience embedding a new data stack or maturing an early-stage engineering practice.
  • Experience building a community of practice or scaling standards beyond your own team.
  • Experience in health or another sector handling sensitive personal information.
  • Relevant industry certifications, such as Snowflake, dbt or cloud platform certifications.

Why join us

  • Real impact: your work supports services that patients and clinicians depend on every day.
  • Shape it early: set the standards for a modern stack while it's still being built, not inherit someone else's.
  • Influence at scale: grow a community of practice and represent HealthShare NSW across NSW Health.

How to apply

Submit your resume and answer the two questions below, in no more than 350 words each. For more information, view the Position Description. Shortlisted candidates will complete a short code review exercise and a presentation on the day of interview. No preparation is needed.

Question 1: Data onboarding (250 words): Provide a summary of a data source you onboarded that turned out harder than expected. What was the source and ingestion method? What made it difficult, including anything the platform provider controlled? What did you personally decide, and what would you do differently?

Question 2: Code review and standards (250 words): Provide a summary of time you reviewed a solution and declined to approve or sent back for significant changes. What was wrong, how did you give the feedback, and what did you change in the team's standards or tooling afterwards so it was less likely to happen again?

This recruitment may be used to create a talent pool for similar future roles (ongoing or temporary) that may arise over the next 18 months.

Applicants will be assessed against the essential criteria in Position Description

If successful following the application close date, you will be required to attend interview as well as reference checks
