KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Standard Costing, BOMs & Routings
- Build and maintain bills of material (BOMs), production routings, and standard costs within the ERP system.
- Establish and maintain landed costs and consolidated cost structures for raw materials, components, and finished goods.
- Partner with Operations and production teams to ensure BOMs and routings reflect actual manufacturing processes.
- Maintain BOM quantities, units of measure, scrap and yield assumptions, effective dates, and version controls so product costs remain accurate.
- Understand how work centres, production steps, setup time, run time, labour hours, machine hours, and production yields flow through routings and standard cost calculations.
- Support cost rollups and controlled updates to material, labour, machine, subcontract, and overhead standards.
Variance & Production Cost Analysis
- Analyze purchase price variances, material usage variances, labour variances, and overhead absorption variances.
- Identify root causes of cost variances and recommend corrective actions to Operations and Supply Chain.
- Monitor overhead absorption rates and recommend updates as production volumes and cost structures change.
- Develop and maintain manufacturing overhead pools, allocation drivers, and fixed and variable overhead rates using practical production measures such as labour hours, machine hours, batches, or output volume.
- Analyze under- and over-absorption, distinguish volume effects from spending or efficiency issues, and recommend rate or process changes when required.
- Evaluate batch yields, waste, rework, downtime, and other operating factors that affect actual production cost.
- Inventory & Cost of Goods Sold
- Perform inventory valuation, reconciliation, and cost analysis across multiple production locations.
- Understand the complete cost flow from raw materials and work in process through finished goods inventory and cost of goods sold.
- Identify and monitor slow-moving, excess, and obsolete inventory.
- Lead month-end and quarter-end COGS close activities, including accruals, cost adjustments, journal entries, and reconciliations.
ERP Systems & Multi-Entity Support
- Participate in ERP configuration and setup meetings covering costing, production, and inventory modules across business units.
- Support cost-item setup, data validation, and testing as new entities and product lines are brought onto the shared ERP platform.
- Act as a costing subject-matter resource during system implementation and process standardization projects.
Reporting & Business Partnering
- Develop unit cost analysis, gross margin reporting, and cost-performance dashboards for management.
- Partner with the Controller and Operations/Product teams to validate costing inputs used in pricing and quoting decisions.
- Support internal and external audit requests related to inventory, cost of goods sold, and related accounts.
Team & Process Development
- Act as the group's initial dedicated costing resource across business units as the finance function scales.
- Document costing procedures and systems workflows to support onboarding of future finance hires.
- Help train and onboard a second cost accountant as headcount grows, and help define how costing duties are divided across business units.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE & TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE
Manufacturing Costing Knowledge
- 2+ years of relevant cost accounting experience, including direct experience in a manufacturing or process / discrete manufacturing environment.
- Hands-on knowledge of BOMs, routings, work centres, standard cost rollups, overhead rates, absorption, inventory valuation, and production variance analysis.
- Ability to explain how operational activities and master-data changes affect unit cost, inventory, margins, and cost of goods sold.
- Experience investigating cost variances with Operations and identifying the underlying operational or system cause, not only preparing the accounting entry.
ERP, Data & Operational Partnership
- Practical experience using ERP costing, inventory, and production modules.
- Strong Excel and data-analysis skills, with the ability to reconcile information across purchasing, production, inventory, and the general ledger.
- Comfort working with plant, production, supply chain, and finance teams to validate processes and costing assumptions on the production floor.
- Progress toward a recognized accounting designation is preferred.
- Strong analytical judgment, attention to detail, and the ability to build clear, repeatable costing processes and documentation.
- Clear communication skills and the ability to translate detailed cost information into practical recommendations for management and Operations.
Salary Range
The salary range for this position is $70,000 to $85,000 annually, commensurate with experience and qualifications, plus ONNI Group's standard benefits package.
