Overview

We're looking for a Director, Engagement Strategy to lead engagement strategy across key brands and initiatives, shape connected audience experiences, and turn insight into clear, actionable direction for clients and integrated teams.

The Director is a leader of people and brand who owns strategic outcomes from insight through activation. This person shapes the strategic direction, guides teams through complexity, manages senior client relationships, and ensures the work delivers against audience and business objectives.

The successful candidate will combine strategic rigor, audience fluency, omnichannel expertise, and strong people leadership. They will be equally comfortable architecting end-to-end engagement strategies, directing integrated teams, presenting to senior clients, coaching talent, and translating emerging shifts in data, technology, and AI into practical opportunities for brands.

Responsibilities

  • Research and Insight Leadership
  • Lead the integration of audience, market, performance, cultural, and competitive intelligence into cohesive engagement strategies.
  • Prioritize the insights most likely to influence audience behavior, experience quality, and business outcomes.
  • Translate complex data and research into clear strategic implications, opportunities, and choices.
  • Look beyond the category to identify emerging behaviors and fresh sources of inspiration.
  • Use insights to advance personalization, content delivery, test-and-learn planning, and ongoing optimization.
  • Anticipate how AI is reshaping discovery, consideration, engagement, and continued treatment behaviors.

Audience Leadership

Lead audience-centered engagement strategy across DTC, HCP, and Patient Services initiatives.

Ensure strategies reflect the distinct needs, motivations, barriers, behaviors, and decision roles of patients, caregivers, healthcare professionals, and support stakeholders.

Find opportunities to connect experiences across audiences and moments in the healthcare journey.

Translate audience insights into actionable journeys, engagement frameworks, activation pillars, and channel recommendations.

Balance a consistent brand experience with the tailored experiences required by different audiences.

Help clients and teams understand how audience relationships intersect and where connected planning can create greater value.

Build audience fluency within the team through coaching, clear strategic guidance, and strong examples.

Define overarching strategic architecture for brands, portfolios, platforms, and long-term engagement initiatives.

Architect end-to-end engagement strategies across brands, initiatives, and complex customer journeys.

Connect clinical, behavioral, cultural, audience, business, and channel insights into clear strategic narratives.

Develop strategic frameworks, journeys, ecosystems, briefs, and activation approaches that teams can implement.

Balance immediate brand priorities with a forward-looking view of audience needs and market opportunities.

Guide multiple teams in translating strategy into content plans, experiences, channel programs, and measurement approaches.

Shape and deliver recommendations for senior client leadership, organic growth opportunities, and new-business assignments.

Shape future-state engagement ecosystems that drive audience and business value.

Design connected channel ecosystems that align audience needs with brand and business objectives.

Define the roles of paid, owned, earned, CRM, media, social, service, field, technology, and emerging channels.

Ensure channel strategies connect to the audience journey, content strategy, sequencing, personalization, and measurement framework.

Evaluate digital opportunities such as CRM platforms, third-party data, AI search and discovery, and emerging engagement environments.

Use channel and performance data to identify barriers, optimize experiences, and recommend test-and-learn opportunities.

Partner with Media, CRM, Technology, Experience, Creative, Patient Services, and Analytics teams to bring the ecosystem to life.

Write clear channel-specific guidance that arms teams and partners to implement the strategy consistently.

Maintain a practical understanding of channel constraints, opportunities, and implementation implications.

Lead senior-level planning conversations, workshops, executive presentations, and moments of organizational change.

Serve as a strategic lead and trusted advisor for key client relationships.

Translate business and audience challenges into clear strategic direction, implications, and recommendations.

Lead planning conversations, workshops, presentations, and strategic reviews with senior clients and agency partners.

Build durable client relationships by understanding business priorities, anticipating needs, and bringing proactive thinking.

Find opportunities to expand strategic scope, improve the work, and deepen Engagement Strategy's role.

Partner with Account, Project Management, and capability leads to align ambition, scope, staffing, and delivery.

Raise strategic or operational risks early and bring recommended paths forward.

Establish clear standards for strategic rigor, communication, collaboration, and accountability.

Lead and develop Engagement Strategy talent across assigned brands, initiatives, or workstreams.

Coach team members to strengthen critical thinking, audience and channel fluency, communication, and ownership.

Delegate effectively, establish clear expectations, and hold direct reports and collaborators accountable for quality and follow-through.

Manage talent-to-task decisions, workload, onboarding, and near-term staffing needs in partnership with leadership.

Create opportunities for junior strategists to build confidence, visibility, and increasing independence.

Provide direct, timely feedback and support development planning and performance conversations.

Model inclusive leadership, sound judgment, and a commitment to team health and sustainable performance.

Set a clear strategic vision for integrated teams while respecting and drawing on each rigor's expertise.

Address misalignment or tension directly and constructively to keep teams focused on shared outcomes.

Guide cross-functional partners through complexity, competing inputs, and decisions.

Represent Engagement Strategy professionally in client, integrated leadership, and growth forums.

Create ways of working that improve clarity, cohesion, efficiency, and accountability.

Build trust with cross-discipline peers and provide direction to integrated strategists in partnership with their capability leaders.

Use AI responsibly to strengthen executive communications, synthesis, and strategic storytelling.

Set a clear communication standard that supports alignment, momentum, and confident decision-making.

Provide context and implications, not simply updates, and anticipate the questions stakeholders will need answered.

Translate complexity into concise, persuasive strategic narratives for clients and teams.

Adapt communication style and level of detail to the audience, situation, and decision required.

Maintain consistency across verbal communication, written documentation, presentations, and delivery.

Raise issues with a clear assessment of the risk and recommended paths forward.

Use AI responsibly to improve research, synthesis, clarity, and the efficiency of strategic storytelling.

Track record of building teams, developing talent, coaching leaders, and establishing high standards for strategic quality.

Approximately 8 or more years of experience in Engagement Strategy, communications planning, customer experience, digital strategy, consulting, marketing, or a related rigor.

Experience leading engagement strategy across brands, initiatives, or complex customer journeys from insight through activation.

Demonstrated fluency across DTC, HCP, and Patient Services audiences, with the ability to connect insights and experiences across healthcare ecosystems.

Strong understanding of audience strategy, omnichannel engagement, customer journeys, ecosystem design, experience planning, and measurement.

Proven ability to translate research, data, and performance signals into clear strategic recommendations and actionable frameworks.

Experience leading integrated teams and partnering effectively across Brand Strategy, Data and Analytics, Creative, Media, CRM, Technology, Experience, and Account Management.

Ability to own strategic outcomes, manage complex workstreams, and operate independently with minimal oversight.

Experience managing and developing talent, delegating effectively, and providing clear feedback and coaching.

Strong senior-client communication, facilitation, presentation, and strategic storytelling skills.

Demonstrated ability to identify organic growth opportunities and strengthen the agency's strategic remit.

Experience applying data, analytics, technology, and AI to strategic development, workflow improvement, and optimization.

Ability to lead through ambiguity, changing priorities, and complex cross-functional environments.

Significant healthcare, pharmaceutical, wellness, or regulated-category experience strongly preferred.
